Breakfast Before the Crowds in St Ives

Short answer: Be at the harbour before nine: the light is at its best, the lanes are empty, and you'll walk straight into places that have queues by half ten. Park at Trenwith and walk down.

The golden hour nobody uses

St Ives between eight and ten is a different town. The harbour beach is clean sand, the gulls outnumber the people, and the light that fills the galleries all afternoon is coming up over the bay. By eleven the lanes are shoulder to shoulder in season. Breakfast is how you get the good version.

Where to eat

• Crowst — the name locals give you when you ask about brunch; small, popular, and exactly the sort of place that rewards arriving early rather than queueing later.
• Tretho Lounge — roomier, easier with a group, and a solid all-day breakfast menu.
• Porthminster Beach Café — when you want the table-on-the-beach version; morning service varies seasonally, so check before setting your heart on it.
• Porthgwidden Beach Café — the small cove on the Island's far side, facing the sunrise; the most sheltered outdoor breakfast in town on a still morning.

The parking move

Driving into the harbour area mid-morning in season is the classic St Ives mistake. Park at Trenwith at the top of town and walk down (ten minutes, steep on the way back), or do it properly: park at St Erth and take the branch line in — the five-minute ride along Porthkidney sands is the best value train journey in Cornwall, and it lands you two minutes from breakfast.

After — while it's still quiet
