Carbis Bay Beach Guide: Parking, Train and Where to Eat

2026-10-20·St Ives

Short answer: Carbis Bay has its own station on the St Ives Bay Line, one stop before St Ives, with trains about every 30 minutes. The beach car park is small, and Porthrepta car park is about £6.30 for 24 hours. Dogs are banned 10am to 6pm from 15 May to 30 September. Lifeguards are seasonal, and the best-rated food is a walk along the coast at Porthminster.

Carbis Bay is the sheltered, sandy beach one stop before St Ives on the branch line train. It is a calmer alternative to the town beaches, but parking, lifeguard dates and dog rules all change with the season, so it pays to know them before you go.

How do you get to Carbis Bay Beach by train?

Carbis Bay has its own station on the St Ives Bay Line, so this is one beach where leaving the car behind is easy. The St Ives tourism site says trains run about every 30 minutes, year round, seven days a week, and that the coastal ride from St Erth takes 10 to 15 minutes. It lists the fares as £4 for an adult day return, £2 for a child aged 5 to 15 and £10 for a family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children).

The simplest plan is to park at St Erth, which the same page says has more than 500 spaces, is open 24 hours and costs £4.50 Monday to Friday and £3.50 at weekends. Then take the train to Carbis Bay, or stay on for one more stop to Porthminster and St Ives. Our St Ives park and ride review and St Ives parking guide cover the other options.

Where to park at Carbis Bay

The beach has one small car park beside it, and 360 Cornwall says charges apply but gives no amount. A larger, cheaper car park sits on the road down to the beach, and the same guide says the walk from there to the sand is steep and takes 5 to 10 minutes. On a hot day, expect the small car park to be full early.

The better-known alternative is Porthrepta car park (TR26 2NZ), which the St Ives tourism site puts at about £6.30 for 24 hours. From there you can take the one-stop train or walk about 15 minutes along the South West Coast Path into St Ives. If you only want the beach, the station is the least stressful way in. Check the machine or app for the day's price, because car park charges change.

Are there lifeguards and can you swim at Carbis Bay?

Yes, in season. A lifeguard cover list from Breaks in Cornwall showed Carbis Bay patrolled from 19 July to 7 September in 2025, which is a shorter season than Porthminster's. I could not find confirmed 2026 dates for Carbis Bay, so check the RNLI beach page before you plan a swim outside the school holidays. The RNLI rule is simple: no flags means no lifeguards, and you swim between the red and yellow flags when they are out.

Beachlets' listing for the beach says its sheltered position makes the sea calmer than many nearby beaches, and that surfing is not permitted. 360 Cornwall describes about a mile of golden sand that suits families with young children, and it notes that the tide matters near Carrick Gladden (Hawks Point), the one part of the bay it flags as tidally affected. Leave that end alone as the tide comes in.

Can you take dogs to Carbis Bay Beach?

Not all summer. Cornwall Council and St Ives Town Council both list a ban from 15 May to 30 September, between 10am and 6pm. Outside those hours, and from 1 October to 14 May, dogs are allowed. St Ives Town Council says enforcement officers can issue a £100 fixed penalty notice. For a dog-friendly beach in summer, see dog-friendly beaches in St Ives.

Where to eat at Carbis Bay

Food right on the beach is more limited than at Porthminster, and the ratings are mixed.

The Beach Club

3.8 from 577 Google reviews. Reviewers praise the view and say grill and seafood dishes are the strongest. Others call it overpriced, and one mentions a 13% service charge. Reviewers also mention baby changing in the toilets and a takeaway hatch for drinks and ice cream. It suits a view-led lunch more than a bargain one.

Walter's on the Beach

3.6 from 70 Google reviews, with a high price point (Google marks it as the top price band). Reviewers praise the kitchen and the beach view, but several criticise the front-of-house service. Book ahead, and treat it as a special-occasion option rather than a beach snack stop.

Porthminster Beach Cafe

The stronger-rated choice is along the coast at Porthminster: 4.5 from 1,840 Google reviews. Reviewers praise the monkfish curry, the lobster and the beach views. It is more of a sit-down restaurant, and one reviewer was told the sea-edge tables had been booked six months ahead. One reviewer dined with a dog at a window table, but check the dog policy when you book.

Carbis Bay or Porthminster: which is better?

Carbis Bay is longer, quieter and easier for toddlers who want space. Porthminster is closer to the harbour, has the better café choice and has a longer lifeguard season. If you are weighing up all of St Ives, our guide to the best beaches in St Ives covers each one, and quiet beaches in St Ives has more space to spread out. The beach has a Google listing rated 4.6 from 1,874 Google reviews, where visitors mention the clear water, toilets and the lifeguards running activities for children.

Is Carbis Bay good for a day with children?

Yes, for the right ages. The sand is soft, the water is sheltered and the toilets and café are on the beach. The things to plan for are the steep walk from the cheaper car park, the shorter lifeguard season and a small amount of tidal change at the Hawks Point end.
