Fistral Beach Guide: Surfing, Parking and Where to Eat

2026-10-20·Newquay

Short answer: Fistral's main car park is at the north end; a third-party 2026 listing gives £2.20 for 1 hour and £15 for 14 hours. RNLI lifeguards patrol daily 10am to 6pm from 3 April to 1 November 2026. The south end is mellower and suits beginners, the north end is for experienced surfers. Dogs are reported as welcome all year.

Fistral is Newquay's big surf beach, facing west into the Atlantic with a headland at the north end and the Pentire headland at the south. It is the busiest beach in town for surfers, and it takes some planning on parking, tide and which end to choose.

Where to park at Fistral Beach

The main car park is at the north end, on the headland above the sand. The Newquay Activity Centre's Fistral guide lists a 2026 tariff for 8am to midnight: £2.20 for 1 hour, £3.80 for 2 hours, £6.00 for 3 hours, £8.50 for 5 hours, £12.00 for 12 hours and £15.00 for 14 hours. That is a third-party listing, so check the board when you arrive. Alternatives it names are Little Fistral, Belmont Long Stay and Dane Road. At the south end there is mostly limited street parking, and the guide suggests using Atlantic Road or the Pentire Headland car park and walking.

Our own Newquay beach parking guide lists Towan Headland as free in winter, and has more on the town car parks. In summer, our guide to parking when car parks are full is worth reading first.

Which end of Fistral is best?

This matters, especially for surfing. According to the same guide:

The headland peak is described as best from mid to low tide. The incoming tide around the rock pools at the south end can catch people out, so keep an eye behind you. For lesson prices and the minimum age at each school, see our Newquay surf lessons guide.

Are there lifeguards at Fistral?

Yes. The RNLI's Fistral page lists daily patrols from 3 April to 1 November 2026, 10am to 6pm, with changes possible at short notice. No flags means no lifeguards. Swim or bodyboard between the red and yellow flags and never swim alone. The RNLI page links to a July 2025 report of lifeguards rescuing 17 people from a rip current at Fistral, so treat a red flag as final and do not trust how calm it looks from the car park. If Fistral is too big on the day, our guide to where to go when Fistral is too rough has sheltered options, and Little Fistral's tidal pools are a calmer low-tide alternative.

Toilets and access at Fistral

The Newquay Activity Centre lists public toilets at both the north and south ends. A beach wheelchair is available from Fistral Beach hire, and you should call ahead to reserve it. From the north car park you reach the sand over a sloping bank, while the south end has a steep flight of steps. Our flat access beaches guide compares Newquay's options for buggies and wheelchairs.

Can you take dogs to Fistral?

The Newquay Activity Centre says dogs are welcome off lead all year, without restriction, if kept under control, and asks you to stay on marked paths to protect the dunes. The dogs-on-beaches page on Cornwall Council's website did not list Fistral in its seasonal ban tables when we read it. Rules can change, so check the signs at the entrance. Our dog-friendly beaches in Newquay guide has more, and strong rips mean a dog that loves the water should stay on a lead when the surf is big.

Where to eat at Fistral

Most of the food is on the headland by the main car park, with a few places at the south end. Google hours can change by season.

The Fish House Fistral

Rated 4.7 from 1,635 Google reviews. Reviewers praise the seabass, hake and scallops, mention a gluten free menu, and say it handles anniversaries well. Google lists 12pm to 9pm daily. It suits couples and special meals rather than quick beach snacks, so book ahead.

SeaSpray Fistral

Rated 4.8 from 909 Google reviews. A small cafe at the south end. Reviewers recommend the pancakes, shakshuka and pulled pork toastie, and say it is dog friendly with water bowls and a doggy menu. Google lists Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 3pm, and closed Monday and Tuesday. It is small and gets busy, and one reviewer arrived at 10am to beat the queue.

Fistral Boardmasters Beach Bar

Rated 4.5 from 1,218 Google reviews. Reviewers mention the soft shell crab tacos and the garlic pizza bread, and one calls it dog friendly. It has plenty of outdoor seating and Google lists 9am to 11pm daily. Some reviewers feel portions are small for the price.

The Fistral Stable

Rated 4.4 from 2,329 Google reviews. Reviewers praise the large pizzas and the cider tasting board, and say it is relaxed and dog friendly. Google lists 11:30am to 9pm most days and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. It suits families and groups.

Hope Café

Rated 4.8 from 46 Google reviews, below our usual review count, but it is a good quick coffee at the south end after a surf, according to reviewers. Google lists 9am to 4pm daily, and the van may not run every day in winter.

One warning on the biggest name: Fistral Bar & Kitchen has the most reviews but only 3.4 from 2,151 on Google. Reviewers criticise the fish and chips and price, and warn about seagulls, so we would pick one of the places above.
