New Year's Eve in St Ives: Fancy Dress, the Harbour Fireworks and the Last Train Problem

2026-09-06·St Ives

Short answer: Costume is compulsory in spirit. The town centre closes to traffic, the harbour is the gathering point and fireworks go off at midnight. Parking is impossible after mid-afternoon and the branch line doesn't run late — stay in town, book a taxi days ahead, or park at Lelant Saltings and walk.

This is one of our town-by-town winter guides — the full county picture is in Christmas and New Year in Cornwall 2026.

What it's like

St Ives on 31 December: the streets around the harbour closed to cars, every pub open, and thousands of people in fancy dress — proper effort, groups in themes, the lifeboat crew in something ridiculous. It's boisterous rather than rowdy and it builds all evening to fireworks over St Ives Harbour at midnight. It's the best-known New Year in Cornwall for a reason, and it's not an evening for anyone who wants a quiet drink.

2026 dates: 31 December; fireworks at midnight over the harbour as in previous years. Town council confirms road closures in December. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

Where to stand

The harbour front — Wharf Road and the Lifeboat slip — is the heart of it and the best fireworks view, and it's shoulder to shoulder from 11pm. Smeaton's Pier gives a slightly clearer view if you're early. For a calmer vantage with children, the top of the harbour by the Sloop, or Porthminster Beach across the point.

With children

Doable until about 9pm — dress up, walk the harbour, eat early, home. After that the crowds and the drink make it a grown-ups' night. There's no early family fireworks display here, unlike Looe.

Getting in and out

This is the real question. Parking in town is gone by early afternoon and the centre closes anyway. Options, in order of sanity:

  1. Stay in St Ives. Book by the summer.
  2. Park at Lelant Saltings Park and Ride or St Erth Station and use the branch line in — but it does not run late on New Year's Eve, so check the last train and plan to walk or taxi back (Lelant is about 3 miles on the coast path, doable in a group with torches, not in heels).
  3. Book a taxi days in advance. Firms take bookings and are fully booked by Christmas.

Eat first

Everywhere with a table is booked; everywhere without is a queue. The Sloop Inn St Ives is the harbour pub; eat somewhere quieter up the hill early and come down for the night. Our St Ives guide has the shortlist.
