Porthleven Day Out for £50 or Less: Real Costs

2026-10-14·Porthleven

Short answer: A Porthleven day out for £50 or less works for two adults because the harbour, beach, Loe Bar, galleries and Shipyard Market are free to enjoy. The fixed cost is parking at Kittos Field, then food. A pasty or bagel lunch keeps you inside budget. Paddleboarding, kayaking, the Seal Sanctuary and restaurant meals are what push it over.

Porthleven is one of the few Cornish harbours where the best things cost nothing. The harbour, the clock tower, the beach, Loe Bar and the Penrose woodland are all free to walk, and the main fixed cost most visitors cannot avoid is parking. That makes a Porthleven day out for £50 or less realistic for two adults, as long as you plan lunch and keep the paid activities out of it.

How much does parking cost in Porthleven?

This is the one cost to pin down. Kittos Field (TR13 9JA, 57 spaces) is the main Cornwall Council car park near the harbour head, with a pay and display machine and the JustPark app. Our Porthleven parking guide, which draws on the council's published tariff, lists winter rates (1 November to 31 March) rising from £1 for an hour to £4.20 for 24 hours, and summer rates (1 April to 31 October) up to £7 for 24 hours. Several visitors report that charging stops at 4pm, so an evening arrival can be free, but read the machine on the day.

The cheaper option is the National Trust. Its Penrose Hill car park, towards Loe Bar, asks for donations rather than a fee, and so do the Trust's Degibna, Chyvarloe, Highburrow and Parc-an-als car parks. Members and non-members alike can use them, and a donation is entirely up to you. Cornwall Council tariffs and the Trust's donation boxes can both change, so check the signs.

Where can you eat cheaply in Porthleven?

Pasties and bagels are the answer. Philps on Commercial Road is rated 4.4 from 64 Google reviews, and reviewers rate the steak and cheese and the vegan pasties. Ann's Pasties and Bar on Fore Street is rated 4.5 from 152 Google reviews, and reviewers praise the size and filling. Neither publishes prices online, so check the board before you order. Our pasty and fish and chips guide compares them properly.

For something lighter, Ced's Bagels in the Shipyard (4.8 from 82 Google reviews) makes bagel sandwiches to order, and Nauti But Ice sells coffee, cake and Roskilly's ice cream. The Shipyard Market also has a few food and coffee traders. A pasty on the harbour wall is the classic budget lunch, though reviewers of both Philps and Porthleven Beach warn that gulls will raid your food if you eat outside.

What does a budget day for two look like?

After a winter day ticket at Kittos Field, that leaves more than £45 of a £50 budget for food and drink for two, which is comfortable for a pasty lunch and hot drinks at any of these places. Check the prices on the day, since cafes and bakeries set their own.

What blows a Porthleven budget?

Paid activities and sit-down meals do. On Eola's booking pages, Vertical Blue Adventures lists a two-hour harbour paddleboard session from £25 a person, and a three-hour coastal kayak adventure from £45 a person, for ages 13 and over, with booking fees on top. Both are well reviewed, but for two people they use up most of a £50 budget by themselves. A restaurant meal at Kota Kai or The Mussel Shoal will do the same.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is a good family day, but its ticket prices are on its own website, and the sanctuary advises booking ahead. Tickets give free entry for 12 months, which helps if you live nearby. It also closes in stormy weather, so check before you set off. Our Helston day out for £50 or less has more cheap options nearby.

If you want to add a Gunwalloe beach stop, National Trust car park charges for non-members are £2 for up to an hour, £4 for up to four hours and £8 beyond that, payable in cash at the cafe or by the JustPark app. Members park free.

Can you do Porthleven for less without a car?

Buses link Porthleven with Helston and Penzance. The National Trust lists routes 2 and 2A for reaching Helston from Penzance station, though route numbers have changed in recent years, so check the current timetable. What a bus buys you is freedom: you can walk to Loe Bar and back along the coast path, or finish in a pub, without watching the car park clock.

Is there a cheap wet-weather plan?

Yes. The galleries, the Shipyard Market and the museum in Helston are all dry and free to enter, and the pubs are warm if you buy one drink. See what to do in Porthleven when it rains. The wider Porthleven guide has more.
