What's Open in Penzance in Winter (and What Isn't)

Short answer: Nearly everything: Penzance is a working town, not a resort. Jubilee Pool's heated geothermal pool runs through winter, the galleries and Chapel Street pubs are year-round, and December brings Mousehole's lights and the Montol midwinter festival.

What stays open

• Jubilee Pool — the art-deco lido's geothermally heated pool is the winter draw: a warm swim with the Atlantic beside you. Bookable sessions; check the winter timetable.
• The culture. Penlee House (the Newlyn School paintings) and the Exchange run year-round; the Minack Theatre is open to visit through winter even though performances are seasonal.
• Chapel Street. The Turks Head (Cornwall's oldest pub) and the Admiral Benbow are winter pubs to their bones, and the Dolphin Tavern on the harbour does fish and chips all year.

What closes or shrinks

• Boat trips and the Scillonian ferry are seasonal.
• Beach cafés along the bay shorten their weeks; the promenade itself is open in all weather — respect the spray zone in a big swell.
