Christmas in Port Isaac: Carols on the Platt, the Fisherman's Friends and What Stays Open

Short answer: Port Isaac's Christmas is small and local: carols on the Platt in the run-up, the Fisherman's Friends often singing in the village at Christmas (check their site), and the Golden Lion and the Mote open with fires. Most cafés and shops close from November; the top car park is empty and the walk down is the same steep hill.

What actually happens

Port Isaac doesn't put on a festival. What it does is quieter and, if you like the village, better: carols sung on The Platt Port Isaac — the slipway at the bottom of the village — in the weeks before Christmas, the harbour lit, the Fisherman's Friends usually performing at home in the village or nearby around Christmas (their tour dates page lists it), and a village Christmas that belongs to the people who live there. Go for an afternoon and evening, not a day.

What's open

• The Golden Lion Port Isaac — the village pub, open through with a fire and food.
• The Mote Restaurant Port Isaac on the harbour — open, book.
• Nathan Outlaw's Outlaw's Fish Kitchen and Outlaw's New Road — check their Christmas closures; they take a break.
• Most of the cafés, the ice cream shop and the gift shops close from November until spring.

Parking, for once

The Port Isaac Main Car Park at the top of the village is empty in winter, and it's still the same steep walk down the hill and back up. There's no easier way in — Port Isaac is a hill with a harbour at the bottom. Not a pushchair village; a carrier for small ones.

A winter afternoon

1. Park at the top around 2pm, walk down through the Doc Martin lanes without a queue for once.
2. Coast path to Port Gaverne — fifteen minutes — and back; or the longer walk out to Port Quin if the weather holds.
3. Back for carols if it's on, then the Golden Lion.
