Port Isaac's car park is at the top of the village and is effectively your only option. The walk down is steep and cobbled; the walk back up is genuinely hard work.
Practical implications: wear proper shoes, buy any books you want on the way back up rather than carrying them down and around all day, and be honest with yourself about mobility. Port Isaac is among the more difficult villages in Cornwall for anyone unsteady on their feet.
In August this is a village of a few hundred people receiving coach parties. By late September that has stopped, and what's left is a working fishing harbour with genuinely good food in it. The festival gets the better version of the place.
Book ahead — Port Isaac's well-known restaurants fill a long way in advance and a festival weekend concentrates demand further.
For something simpler, The Chapel is a converted Methodist chapel on Roscarrock Hill with an art gallery upstairs and the best scones in the village. All Aboard, near the top car park, is the practical choice if you'd rather not do the hill twice.
The coast path from Port Isaac towards Port Quin is one of the better stretches in north Cornwall and is at its best in autumn light. Seal sightings are common along this coast — watch from the clifftop and keep well back.
