Cornwall's independent shops are one of the more underrated parts of a rainy day here — and Falmouth in particular has a genuinely strong cluster of bookshops and record shops within a few minutes of each other, largely thanks to the university crowd keeping them viable year-round.
Rubicund combines a bookshop with a proper café and a genuinely communal atmosphere — people talk to each other here in a way they don't in most shops. There's a lending library and a pay-it-forward scheme for anyone who needs a warm drink they can't afford. Vegan options too.
Falmouth Bookseller has a large children's section, a bench to sit and browse on, and staff who'll order in anything they don't stock. It's open until 9pm, which is genuinely unusual for a bookshop and useful on a wet evening.
Jam is a record shop and coffee bar in one, with headphones and a turntable so you can actually listen to second-hand vinyl before buying — a genuinely rare thing now. Reportedly the cheapest coffee in Falmouth too.
Sounds OK stocks vinyl, CDs, DVDs and cassettes across every genre at genuinely good prices, with a knowledgeable owner. Space inside is tight, so it's more of a focused dig than a leisurely browse.
Dig and Delve is harder to categorise — vintage clothing, guitars, second-hand cameras and vinyl, with a jukebox in the corner. It's the kind of place you go in for ten minutes and come out an hour later.
St Austell has Mad for Miniatures for trading cards and Warhammer, with tables where you can actually play. Bude has Spencer Thorn, a proper independent bookshop that's wheelchair accessible and stocks board games and puzzles alongside books.
The honest answer is that they're not really competing on price or range — they're competing on being places worth spending time in. Rubicund's lending library and Jam's listening station exist because the owners want people to linger, and that's exactly what makes them worth a detour on a wet afternoon.
The Falmouth shops sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, so a genuinely good rainy-day plan is starting at Rubicund with a coffee, working through the record shops, and finishing at Falmouth Bookseller — three or four hours without going outside for more than a minute at a time.
