Looe's New Year's Eve has become the one the whole county talks about. The town closes its centre to traffic, both sides of the river fill with people in fancy dress — genuinely everyone, from toddlers to grandparents — and fireworks go up from the Banjo Pier Looe twice: an early display at 6pm so families can see it, and the big one at midnight over the harbour. The pubs are packed, the streets are a party, and the police keep it friendly.

Come for the afternoon, dress up, walk both sides of the river, eat early, watch the 6pm fireworks from Rock Towers, and be in the car by 7:30 before the evening crowd arrives. That's a brilliant day with under-10s and misses nothing they'd want.
The main car parks — Millpool Car Park Looe on the West side, and the ones by the station — fill by early afternoon. Road closures from late afternoon mean you may not be able to drive out until well after midnight anyway. If you're doing the midnight version, either stay in town (book months ahead), book a taxi in advance (days ahead, not hours), or use the branch line: check whether the Looe Valley Line is running a late service. Most years a lot of people simply walk to Polperro-side accommodation or sleep in Looe.
Book a table for the early evening as a base — The Ship Inn Looe and Sardine Factory Looe both fill weeks ahead. The New Year's Day swim off the beach is the morning after's tradition, raising money for the RNLI, if you're still standing.
