Short answer: Eden is the family day: ice rink, Father Christmas (booked separately), festive lights in the biomes, from mid-November. Heligan's Night Garden is an evening light trail through the gardens on selected dates from November to early January — magical, cold and ticketed. Both need booking; both sell out weekends.

Eden Project runs Christmas from mid-November to early January: an ice rink beside the biomes (skate hire included with a session, penguin aids for small ones), Father Christmas in his grotto as a separate booked experience with a gift, festive planting and lights inside the Mediterranean biome, and the usual play and café. The rink is the thing children remember. Annual passholders get in free but still pay for skating and Santa; day tickets are pricey, so it's a better day for members or people who'll come back.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan turns into a light trail after dark on selected nights: lanterns through the jungle, illuminated walks, fire pits, hot food and drink. It's an evening rather than a day — an hour and a half at a slow pace — and it's beautiful in a way Eden's isn't. It's also cold, muddy in parts and not a pushchair-friendly route (carriers again). Timed tickets, and weekends go first.

The Charlestown Beach Boxing Day swim, run by the rowing club, registers from 10:45 for an 11:30 dip and — unusually — allows wetsuits. Pebbly beach, so wear something on your feet. The harbour pubs are open after.
Eden's car parks are big and free with the ticket; Heligan's is fine outside peak nights. Neither is reachable in the evening by public transport — it's a car job. Dogs: Heligan's Night Garden no; Eden, assistance dogs only.
