Padstow is built around its harbour, which means a lot of the town's obvious appeal — wandering the quayside, a boat trip, a beach walk — genuinely stops being fun once the rain sets in. The good news is there's a proper, if compact, run of indoor options that hold up well for a family day even when the forecast is against you.
A hands-on conservation centre where kids can learn about lobsters and the local fishing industry — genuinely educational without feeling like a lesson, and entirely indoors. If you're staying nearby for the week, it's worth knowing the entry ticket often works out better value if you plan to return within the year, so it's worth asking about that when you buy.
Small, free, and volunteer-run, housed inside a preserved railway station with genuinely charming local history displays. It won't fill an entire afternoon on its own, but it's an easy, no-cost stop that pairs naturally with a longer visit to the Lobster Hatchery just up the road.
If the rain looks set in for a while rather than a passing shower, Cherry Trees Coffee House is widely regarded as having the best cakes and coffee in Padstow, with a cosy interior and harbour views even when you can't comfortably be out in them — and there's a takeaway hatch if you time it wrong and there's a queue. Caffè Rojano, an all-day café-restaurant with pizza and pasta, has the advantage of long opening hours and a proper menu if you need lunch as well as shelter, not just a coffee.
Worth being honest rather than padding the list: Padstow Sealife Safaris, the RIB boat trips out to see seals and dolphins, are genuinely weather-dependent and can be cancelled or made a much less pleasant experience in poor conditions — check directly before you commit rather than assuming a booking will simply go ahead regardless. Similarly, Stepper Point and the harbour walks are beautiful but exposed, better saved for a drier day than pushed through in driving rain with young children.
Start with the National Lobster Hatchery while everyone's fresh, walk the short distance to Padstow Museum for a quieter, shorter stop, then settle in somewhere warm — Cherry Trees or Caffè Rojano — for lunch once patience is wearing thin. That's a genuinely full half-day without needing the harbour to cooperate with the weather at all.
Padstow's beaches are close enough — Trevone Bay and Harlyn Beach both within a short drive — that if the forecast improves mid-visit, it's worth having a backup plan ready to switch outdoors rather than sticking rigidly to an indoor schedule once the weather's actually turned in your favour.
Both the Lobster Hatchery and Padstow Museum are genuinely good, but neither is designed to hold attention for hours at a time, and moving between them means a short walk through the rain regardless. Bringing something simple to occupy the gap — a favourite small toy, a spotting game for the walk between venues — smooths over what would otherwise be the weakest part of an indoor rainy-day plan: the bits in between the actual stops.
