Tintagel Castle is, fairly enough, the reason most people first put this village on their itinerary — but it's worth knowing there's a genuinely good day's worth of things to do here that don't involve the castle at all, whether you've already done it, decided it's not for your group, or simply want to make more of your time in the area.
The beach directly beneath the castle, home to Merlin's Cave and a small waterfall, is genuinely stunning in its own right and doesn't require a castle ticket to visit. Tide times matter specifically for cave access, so it's worth checking before you plan around it, but the beach itself is accessible regardless of tide.
A short drive from the village, Trebarwith is a lifeguarded surf beach with a pub, café and gift shop in the village above it — one of the more practical, family-friendly beaches in the area if you want a full beach day rather than just a quick look at the sand.
A short walk from the village centre, Bossiney is a dramatic, largely untouched cove with a waterfall and rock pools. The walk down is steep with no facilities, so it suits a confident walker rather than a leisurely amble, but the payoff is a beach that feels genuinely undiscovered compared to the busier options nearby.
A short drive away, this is a genuinely magical wooded waterfall walk with a café and sculpture park along the route — one of the best "not the castle" days out in the whole area, and worth treating as a destination in its own right rather than an afterthought.
The South West Coast Path around Tintagel is genuinely one of the more dramatic stretches of the entire route, connecting the village to Bossiney and beyond along the clifftops. Free, and arguably the single best way to actually experience this stretch of coastline regardless of whether the castle is part of your day.
Tintagel's high street is built almost entirely around cream teas and Cornish gift shops, and it's worth treating that as a genuine activity rather than just something to pass through on the way to the car park. North Shore Gallery and Jo Downs Handmade Glass are both worth a browse for genuinely good Cornish landscape prints and handmade glassware, and King Arthur's Café and Charlie's both do a proper afternoon tea if that's the pace you're after.
Start with the coast path or Tintagel Haven in the morning while it's quieter, break for lunch or a cream tea in the village, then spend the afternoon at St Nectan's Waterfall or Trebarwith depending on whether woodland or beach appeals more. It's a genuinely full day without the castle featuring at all.
Tintagel works well as a split-day destination if part of your group wants the castle and part doesn't — the village is small enough that meeting back up for lunch is easy regardless of who did what that morning, and none of the alternatives above feel like a consolation prize. Genuinely, several visitors come away saying the waterfall or the coast path was the highlight of their day, castle included.
