Best Beaches Near Boscastle: Crackington, Trebarwith, More

2026-10-17·Boscastle

Short answer: Boscastle has no beach, only a harbour. The nearest sand is Bossiney Cove (steep steps, low tide only, check access first), then Trebarwith Strand and Crackington Haven, with Widemouth Bay near Bude a longer drive. Crackington is the easiest for families, with rock pools, toilets, a cafe and a pub behind the beach.

Boscastle has a harbour, not a beach. The inlet is a working National Trust harbour where visiting boats pay mooring fees at the Trust shop, so for sand you have to leave the village. The good news is that the coast either side offers four very different options, and the best beaches near Boscastle depend more on the tide and the season than on distance.

Which beach is closest to Boscastle?

Bossiney Cove (4.8 from 248 Google reviews) is down the coast towards Tintagel. VisitCornwall says it is reached by steep steps, is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, shows up only at low tide, and has no lifeguards. At low tide it joins neighbouring Benoath Cove. The same page carries a February 2023 notice saying Bossiney Haven was closed because of unstable cliffs and does not say whether that has been lifted, so ring the Tintagel Visitor Centre on 01840 779084 before you go, and obey any signs at the top of the steps. There are no facilities. If access is open, it suits confident walkers with proper shoes and a tide table. Our Tintagel beaches guide covers it from the other side.

Is Trebarwith Strand worth the drive?

Trebarwith Strand (4.8 from 1,779 Google reviews) is the lifeguarded surf and sand beach south of Tintagel. At low tide there is sand and rocky outcrops; at high tide the sea reaches the cliffs and covers the sand. The RNLI says the beach is closed for two hours either side of high water and that waves can surge onto the road in big swells. Access is through a rocky gully in the village. In 2026 lifeguards patrol 10am to 6pm daily from 16 May to 27 September, so they are off for the season now. VisitCornwall says swimming is only recommended when lifeguards are on watch.

Dogs: VisitCornwall calls the beach dog-friendly but gives no rules. Cornwall Council's seasonal dog ban list does not include Trebarwith Strand, though it says privately owned beaches may set their own rules, so follow the signs. For flatter coastal options, see our Tintagel flat access beaches guide.

Where should you go for rock pools and a cafe?

Crackington Haven (4.7 from 738 Google reviews) is the easiest family cove in this stretch. VisitCornwall describes dozens of rock pools appearing as the tide goes out, with toilets, a small beach shop, a bistro cafe and a family pub close by. The car park is a single pay-and-display in the village centre behind the beach, and it can fill in warm weather, with some roadside spaces on Mill Ball Hill. The Coombe Barton Inn has its own car park for customers.

In 2026 lifeguards covered the beach daily from 18 July to 6 September, 10am to 6pm. Dogs are banned between 10am and 6pm from 15 May to 30 September, according to Cornwall Council, and are welcome at other times, which makes it a good winter dog beach.

For food, The Cabin Cafe (4.4 from 256 Google reviews) is a short walk from the beach, and the Coombe Barton Inn (4.5 from 354 Google reviews) is the family pub in the village. Opening hours drop in winter, so check before you rely on either. Cornish Secrets names High Cliff, about a mile south, as Cornwall's highest cliff at 735 feet, and mentions the Crackington Cracker circular walk if you want more than a beach stroll.

Is Widemouth Bay too far from Boscastle?

It is the biggest beach on this list, near Bude, so it suits a half day rather than a stop-off. Widemouth Beach (4.7 from 795 Google reviews) has about two miles of sand according to Visit Bude, which lists a Blue Flag and a Seaside Award, a large pay-and-display car park (cash, card or the JustPark app), toilets with an accessible one, a ramp onto the sand and a beach cafe. The southern end becomes rocky Black Rock, good for rock pooling at low tide. Visit Bude also mentions a free car park about a 15-minute walk away along the Coast Path.

The RNLI's 2026 timetable has lifeguards daily from 2 May to 27 September, weekends only from 3 to 18 October, and daily again from 19 October to 1 November, 10am to 6pm. Dogs are banned 10am to 6pm from 15 May to 30 September, so they are allowed now. For the Bude side of things, our Bude family beaches guide goes further.

Which beach suits dogs?

Outside summer, all of these are open to dogs. From 15 May to 30 September, Cornwall Council bans them from Crackington Haven and Widemouth Bay between 10am and 6pm, while Trebarwith Strand and Bossiney are not on the council's list but may have local rules. Boscastle itself is easy: the National Trust welcomes dogs under control on its land, and its cafe, courtyard and shop all allow them. Our dog-friendly Boscastle guide has pubs for afterwards.

Which beach is best in winter?

Winter is when the pebbles and sand are least crowded. Crackington Haven and Widemouth Bay allow dogs again from 1 October, but check cafe and pub hours before you rely on them. Wear boots, check tide tables, and never rely on lifeguards outside the published dates: the RNLI says "No flags = no lifeguards" and that lifeguard dates can change at short notice. Back in the village, our Boscastle town page has more, and the winter guide lists what stays open.

How do you check tide times?

Bossiney Cove only appears at low tide, Trebarwith Strand closes around high water, and Crackington's rock pools show as the sea goes out. Check a local tide table on the morning, and plan to leave the beach well before the tide turns. Trebarwith's own gully is the way back up, and waves can reach the road when swell is big.
