Short answer: Helston itself has no beach. Kynance Cove is the spectacular one and the busiest; Poldhu and Mullion are the easier family options; Gunwalloe is the quiet one. All are a short drive down narrow lanes.
Helston is a market town a few miles inland, so the beaches are all a drive — but the Lizard coastline is among the best in Cornwall and none of it is far.
The famous one, and genuinely spectacular — serpentine rock stacks, turquoise water, white sand. National Trust car park, free to members. Two things to know: it is a steep walk down and back, and the beach shrinks dramatically at high tide. Check tide times or you will arrive to find very little sand.
The easy family option. Sand, gentle water, a car park close to the beach and a cafe on site. Far less walking than Kynance, and better with small children or anyone who finds steps hard.
A harbour rather than a big beach, and dramatic in rough weather. Worth going for the setting and the walk rather than for sunbathing.
The quiet one. Sand, a church practically on the beach, National Trust parking, and noticeably fewer people than Kynance even in August.
Not a beach, but the most southerly point in mainland Britain and worth the trip. Wavecrest Cafe there does a cream tea reviewers rate among the best in Cornwall.
The lanes are narrow with few passing places, and journeys take longer than the map suggests. Sea fog drops visibility fast. Car parks at Kynance and Lizard Point fill on sunny days — before 10am is the reliable window.
Restrictions apply on the main beaches between Easter and October, and lift outside that. Out of season the Lizard is genuinely excellent for dog walking.
