Helston at Christmas: The Lights Switch-On, the Lizard in Winter and the Poldhu Boxing Day Swim

2026-09-06·Helston

Short answer: Helston switches its lights on in late November with an evening of entertainment in the town centre. For Boxing Day, Poldhu Cove ten minutes away runs a charity swim with a warm-up at 10:30 and the café open. The Lizard peninsula in winter is the quietest beautiful place in Cornwall.

This is one of our town-by-town winter guides — the full county picture is in Christmas and New Year in Cornwall 2026.

The switch-on

Helston's lights switch-on is a late-November evening — the streets around the Guildhall and Coinagehall Street closed to traffic, stalls, music, children's entertainment and the lights on the steep main street lit together. It's a proper market-town Christmas, not a tourist event, and all the better for it. Free, easy with pushchairs (the street is steep but wide), and parking is easier than the coast.

2026 dates: not yet announced — a late-November evening in recent years; Helston Town Council posts the programme. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

Boxing Day at Poldhu

Poldhu Cove, ten minutes from Helston on the Lizard, holds a Boxing Day swim organised by the beach café: meet at the beach entrance at 10:30 for a warm-up, in as a group, and the Poldhu Beach Cafe opens from 10 with mulled wine, mince pies and hot food, with donations to a chosen local charity. It's one of the friendliest festive swims — small beach, everyone knows everyone, hot chocolate within a minute of getting out. Park in the beach car park early.

2026 dates: 26 December, 10:30 warm-up at Poldhu — the café confirms on its social pages in December. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

The Lizard in winter

December is when the Lizard is at its best for walkers: Kynance Cove without a queue for the car park, Lizard Point with seals in the water and the café open at weekends, the Loe Bar walk from Penrose with dogs off lead. Take the National Trust's winter opening hours seriously — cafés and toilets close early.
