Short answer: Newquay is the best Cornish town for teenagers by a distance. Surf lessons at Fistral, coasteering along the headlands, the indoor skate park at Wave House, and enough independent food to keep them happy.
Most Cornwall guides are written for families with small children. Newquay is genuinely the best town in the county for older kids, and it is worth knowing what actually appeals rather than what looks good on paper.
Fistral is one of the most consistent surf beaches in Europe and there are several schools running lessons for beginners. A two-hour group lesson with board and wetsuit included is the single best thing most teenagers do in Cornwall.
Winter brings the bigger swell and the serious surfing. Summer is better for learning.
Scrambling, swimming and jumping along the coastline with a guide. Genuinely exhilarating, properly supervised, and the thing teenagers talk about afterwards. Minimum ages apply, so check before promising it.
An indoor skate park inside a converted church, with a cafe attached. Unusual, genuinely good, and a proper wet-weather option. Opening hours are limited, so check before going.
Rock pools and caves round the headland, reachable only at low water. Free, and more interesting than the main beach. Check tide times — access is cut off as the tide comes in.
Newquay's independent food scene has improved considerably. BUTTER does sourdough and proper coffee from 7am; NALU is good for breakfast near the seafront; there is decent burger and street food through the town.
An hour away near Liskeard, with a zip wire, giant swing and aqua park in a flooded quarry. Height and age restrictions apply on some activities.
Newquay's summer nightlife has a reputation, and it is largely accurate. Worth knowing if you are staying centrally with younger teenagers on a weekend in August.
