Best Beaches Near Padstow: 9 Bays From Rock to Porthcothan

2026-10-11·Padstow

Short answer: Padstow town has no beach of its own, but there are nine within a few miles. For small children: Trevone (a gentle slope and a stream) or Hawker's Cove (shallow and quiet). For surf: Harlyn or Polzeath. For rock pools: Treyarnon. For the easiest trip: the ferry across to Rock.

Padstow is a harbour, not a beach town, which surprises people. But the estuary and the coast just west of it have some of the best beaches in north Cornwall, from the sheltered sands of the Camel to the surf bays of the Atlantic coast, all within a short drive or a ferry ride.

Which is the best beach in Padstow?

The beaches, one by one

Rock Beach

A calm, sheltered beach reachable by the passenger ferry from Padstow — soft sand and a relaxed, dog-friendly atmosphere.

Good for: families, dogs, couples. 0.6 miles from the centre.

St George's Cove

A remote, beautiful cove with estuary views — access involves a rocky scramble, so better suited to confident walkers than little ones.

Good for: dogs, couples. 0.7 miles from the centre.

Harbour Cove Beach

A vast expanse of sand at low tide, reached by a short walk from the car park. Popular for dog walking and quiet out of season.

Hawker's Cove

A peaceful, uncrowded beach with golden sand and shallow water — well suited to families wanting to escape the busier spots.

Good for: families, dogs, couples. 1.3 miles from the centre.

Harlyn Beach

A dog-friendly favourite with surf gear rental, rock pooling at low tide, and toilets and food just across the road.

Good for: families, dogs, couples. 1.6 miles from the centre.

Trevone Bay

A gently sloping sandy beach with a stream perfect for little ones, plus cafes, shops and a tidal pool nearby.

Good for: families, dogs, couples. 2.2 miles from the centre.

Polzeath Beach

A wide, dramatic surf beach with caves and rock pools to explore, well suited to beginner and intermediate surfers.

Good for: families, dogs, couples. 2.4 miles from the centre.

Treyarnon Bay

Great rock pools and a natural sea pool to explore, with lifeguards on duty and food close by — a real favourite for families.

Good for: families, dogs, couples. 2.6 miles from the centre.

Porthcothan Beach

A tidal beach with hidden coves at low tide, a handy shop and café, and one of the better sunset spots on this stretch of coast.

Good for: families, dogs, couples. 3.3 miles from the centre.

Where to park for the beaches

Each of the Atlantic beaches (Trevone, Harlyn, Treyarnon, Porthcothan) has its own car park, which fills by mid-morning in summer. Harbour Cove is a short walk from its car park. In Padstow itself, see Padstow parking on summer mornings.
