Bude at Christmas: The Lights Switch-On, the Christmas Day Dip and What's Actually Open

2026-09-06·Bude

Short answer: Lights switch-on is a late-November evening in the town centre with stalls and entertainment. The Christmas Day swim goes in at Crooklets late morning, with hundreds watching. Bude stays open through the holidays better than most Cornish towns — the pubs, the Tunnel, the sea pool and the beach are all there.

This is one of our town-by-town winter guides — the full county picture is in Christmas and New Year in Cornwall 2026.

The switch-on

Bude's Christmas lights are switched on in the town centre on an evening in late November, with stalls, entertainment for children, music and the usual cheerful chaos around the Triangle and Belle Vue. It's free and smaller than Newquay's or Falmouth's, which for a lot of families is the point.

2026 dates: not yet announced — a late-November evening in recent years; Bude Town Council and Bude Rotary post details. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

Christmas Day at Crooklets

The Christmas morning dip at Crooklets Beach is a Bude institution: a few hundred go in late morning, fancy dress optional but common, with a big crowd on the sea wall and the surf life saving club keeping an eye. Swimwear rather than wetsuits by tradition. Parking at Crooklets fills, so walk from town. The Bude Sea Pool is there all winter too if you'd rather a tidal pool than surf, unlifeguarded out of season.

2026 dates: 25 December, late morning at Crooklets — check the Bude Surf Life Saving Club page for the exact time. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

What's open over the holidays

Bude has a real year-round population, so it doesn't shut the way the villages do. Reliably:

Surf hire, some beach kiosks and the seasonal attractions shut. Check social media, not websites, for holiday hours.

Boxing Day walk

Compass Point Bude and along the cliffs to Widemouth: high, wide and windy, dogs off the lead out of season, and a fire at Widemouth's Bay View Inn at the end.
