Santa Trains at Bodmin and Lanhydrock at Christmas: A Full Festive Day Near Bodmin

Short answer: Santa Specials run on weekends from late November and daily in the week before Christmas from Bodmin General station — steam train, Santa on board, a present each; book in October when tickets go on sale. Lanhydrock's decorated house and Christmas events are five minutes' drive, National Trust.

The Santa Specials

The Bodmin and Wenford Railway runs its Santa Specials from Bodmin General Station: a steam-hauled trip along the branch with Father Christmas and his helpers moving through the carriages, a present for every child, a mince pie and a drink for adults, and carols on the platform. It's about an hour, it's genuinely charming, and it is the most oversubscribed Christmas event in the area — tickets go on sale in early autumn and the best weekend slots go within weeks.

2026 dates: not yet announced — weekends from late November plus daily 19–24 December in recent years. Book on the railway's website as soon as tickets are released. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

Booking and practicalities

• Book by compartment or by seat depending on the year; check what's included for children under 2.
• Arrive 30 minutes early — there's a station café, a shop and a platform with engines to look at.
• The car park at Bodmin General is decent but fills on Santa days; there's overflow signed.
• Pushchairs fold and go in the guard's van; the carriages are old, so no room in the aisles.
• Dogs: not on the Santa trains.

Lanhydrock at Christmas

Lanhydrock House and Garden, five minutes away, decorates the house for Christmas from late November — trees in the long gallery, the kitchens laid for a Victorian feast, carol singing on selected days, and the estate walks are lovely in cold weather. It's the calm half of the day after the excitement of the train. National Trust members free; book timed entry on busy December weekends. Dogs on the estate paths, not in the house.

A plan

1. Morning Santa Special (the earliest slot is the least crowded on the platform).
2. Lunch at the station café or drive into Bodmin for Bodmin Jail's restaurant — the Jail itself is atmospheric in the dark months.
3. Lanhydrock for the afternoon, house then a walk, back before the light goes.

Also in December

Bodmin's own lights switch-on is a late-November evening with street entertainment; the Camel Trail from Bodmin to Wadebridge is flat, dry and pushchair-friendly whatever the weather.
