Short answer: Helston Flora Day is held on 8 May, which is a Saturday in 2027. The first dance starts at 7am, followed by the children's dance, the noon midday dance and a 5pm evening dance. The Hal-an-Tow pageant runs through town the same day. It is free to watch. Check the official programme for 2027 timings and road closures.
Helston Flora Day is the Cornish spring festival where couples dance through the streets and into shops and houses, to the Furry Dance tune played by the town band. It is free, it is on the town's own calendar, and in 2027 it falls on a Saturday, so expect a big crowd.
Flora Day is held on 8 May. If 8 May falls on a Sunday or Monday it moves to the preceding Saturday, because Monday is market day. In 2027, 8 May is a Saturday, so the festival should be on Saturday 8 May 2027. The Flora Day organisers' site says it is usually held on 8 May, so look at the official page for the confirmed programme.
The first dance starts at 7am, when the big bass drum strikes the first beat. A standard running order for the four dances is:
The exact timings can shift a few minutes from year to year, so check the programme for 2027 before you plan your day.
The Hal-an-Tow is a pageant on the same day that tells Helston's story with mythical and historical figures, including Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, Saint George and Saint Michael. It starts at St John's Bridge and is performed at seven places around the town. The organisers describe it as telling the history of the town, with themes that include the Spanish Armada and the fight between Saint Michael and the devil.
Adult dancers wear lily of the valley, Helston's flower, with men wearing it on the left pointing up and women wearing it upside down on the right. Children dance in white, with boys in white shirts and trousers or shorts, and girls in white dresses with flowers in their hair, in colours that differ by school. Houses and shops are decorated with greenery and flowers. You do not need to dress up to watch, but a sprig of lily of the valley fits in well.
The Helston Town Band, joined by other local players, plays the dances from memory. The tune is thought never to have been written down in the town's tradition, although it has been transcribed more than once. It is easy to pick out, and you will have it in your head for days.
The dancers weave through the main streets and through shops and houses, so there is no single seat. We have not confirmed the 2027 route, so follow the official programme and stewards' signs. Arriving early for the noon dance, the most popular, is sensible, and the 7am dance is much quieter if you can manage it.
We have not confirmed the 2027 parking and road closure arrangements, and roads in the centre are normally closed on the day. Our Helston page and the Helston rainy day guide have more on the town. Park outside the centre where you can and walk in. Allow extra time for the roads around the town.
The Flora Day organisers' on-the-day page gives the most useful practical detail. It is not dated to a year, so check for a 2027 update.
First Bus published a diversion for Flora Day in 2025 covering the U4 and L1 from 5.30am to 8pm. The Blue Anchor, Seven Stars, Godolphin Road and The Parade stops were not served, and buses went round the edge of town via Clodgey Lane and the A394. Do not assume 2027 will match, and look for First Bus's 2027 notice.
The organisers also say there is only one cash point in the town centre, on Coinagehall Street, with others at Spar, Texaco, Tesco and Sainsbury's, some of which charge. Bring cash. Our Helston rainy day guide has indoor options if the weather turns.
The organisers give clear safety advice, and it is worth reading before you go.
Dogs: keep them on leads and under close control at all times. The organisers warn that the middle of the midday dance can frighten dogs, so be ready to move away from the crowd. Pick up after your dog and respect people who are nervous around dogs. They do not say dogs are banned, but the noise of the band and the packed streets make the noon dance a poor choice for a nervous dog. The 7am dance is calmer.
The organisers do not publish a step-free route or accessible viewing area. What they do say is that the town has many uneven surfaces, which can be slippery when wet, and that you should take care on cobbles and near kerbs. Stewards may ask you to move back to make room for the band and dancers, and the town centre is busiest around the Guildhall.

Cafes on the dance route will be packed at midday. Eat early or late, and use our Helston roast guide if you want to book a proper meal.
