2026-10-06·Penzance

Short answer: Walk the promenade, explore Chapel Street (Egyptian House, Admiral Benbow), visit Penlee House (£8, Monday to Saturday), wander the free Morrab Gardens, then go on to Newlyn harbour and its gallery. The Jubilee Pool season ends 1 November, and St Michael's Mount is a short bus or walk away at Marazion.

Penzance is a town you can read in order if you start at the railway station, which Wikipedia describes as both the southernmost and westernmost station in England. Walk out of it and the harbour is beside you, the bay opens beyond, and the spine of Market Jew Street and Chapel Street runs up into town. Most things to do in Penzance sit within a mile of that point. This guide runs through a day, with opening times from the venues and what to swap in when the weather turns.

What is there to do in Penzance in the morning?

Start at the water. Penzance Promenade runs from the harbour towards Newlyn and is free and open all the time. According to Wikipedia, the first part of the promenade dates from 1844. Reviewers like the pebble seats and the view across Mount's Bay to St Michael's Mount.

The Jubilee Pool is the Art Deco lido beside it, opened in 1935 and Grade II listed. The pool's summer 2026 season was announced as running from 31 March to 1 November, with tickets booked through its website, so it is at the very end of its season as this guide is written. After that, check the website for winter sessions or closure. If you only want a look, you can walk around the outside, and Battery Rocks, just behind the pool, is used by sea swimmers year round, according to a local guide.

Is Chapel Street worth walking?

Yes. It has some of the town's oddest buildings. The Egyptian House dates from the 1830s and is covered in Egyptian-style decoration. The Landmark Trust manages it, with shops on the ground floor and holiday accommodation above, so you look from the pavement. The Union Hotel nearby has a Georgian theatre, built around 1787 and closed in 1831, which is said to be where the first public announcement of Nelson's Trafalgar victory was made, according to Wikipedia. The Admiral Benbow was home to a nineteenth-century smuggling gang and is allegedly the inspiration for the Admiral Benbow Inn in Treasure Island. Branwell House, where the mother and aunt of the Brontë sisters once lived, is also on Chapel Street.

At the top of Market Jew Street stands the statue of Humphry Davy. Davy was born in Penzance in 1778 and invented the miner's safety lamp.
