Short answer: Perranporth is a very long sandy beach with RNLI lifeguards daily from 3 April to 1 November in 2026, 10am to 6pm. It is not on Cornwall Council's list of beaches with dog restrictions. The Watering Hole is the pub on the sand. Surf lessons run from the beachfront, and the large seafront car park fills on sunny days.
Perranporth is one of Cornwall's big, open surf beaches, with a town right behind it, a famous beach pub and plenty of room to spread out. It suits families, surfers and dog owners, but the lifeguard flags, the tide and the car park all need a little planning.
Yes. The RNLI's listing for 2026 shows lifeguards daily from 3 April to 1 November, from 10am to 6pm. Details can change at short notice. Lifeguards only patrol between the red and yellow flags, and the RNLI stresses that no flags means no lifeguards. The RNLI has also reported rescues from rip currents at Perranporth, so swim in the flagged area, never alone, and ask a lifeguard where the safest spot is on the day. Surfers should use the black and white flagged area when it is set up.
The RNLI notes that the beach joins with Perran Sands at low tide. A beach cafe and a large seafront car park are listed on the RNLI page.
Perranporth is not on Cornwall Council's list of beaches with seasonal or year-round dog restrictions, so there is no summer ban here, unlike at nearby Chapel Porth, which is on the list from 1 July to 31 August, and Porthtowan, which is on it from 15 May to 30 September. Signs on the day are the final word. For more detail see Perranporth's dog-friendly beaches and our post on taking dogs to The Watering Hole.
The RNLI lists a large car park on the seafront. It is the closest to the sand and it fills first on sunny days, so arrive early in July and August or use another car park in the town. We have a separate guide on where to park when the main car parks are full and one on flat-access beach parking. Charges change by season, so check the machine.
