Short answer: Be on the beach by 10am for the 10:30 start; it's free, run by the surf life saving club, and the rule is no wetsuits. Park at the beach car park early or up in the village. Children can do it in the shallows with a hand held, and everyone warms up at the Watering Hole afterwards.

Perranporth's Boxing Day swim has been going for decades and gets several hundred in the water. It's organised by Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club, starts at 10:30am from the main beach in front of the town, and there's a firm no-wetsuit tradition — swimsuits, fancy dress and grim smiles. There's a mass charge, two minutes of shrieking, and out. Mulled wine and hot drinks are laid on afterwards for a donation. It's free, though the club collects for local causes.

Perranporth Beach Car Park is right on the sand and full by 9:30am. The Perranporth Village Car Park up in the village is the fallback, five minutes' walk down. Coming from the Newquay side, Droskyn Point Car Park above the west end of the beach is small but often overlooked, with a good view of the whole thing if you're spectating.
Perranporth is one of the better festive swims for families because the beach is enormous and flat — you can be in the shallows a hundred yards from the scrum. Hold hands, go in to the knees, out again, wrapped up. Most children think it's the best thing that's ever happened to them, and it's over in a minute. Under-5s: watching with a hot chocolate is entirely honourable.
The Watering Hole Perranporth — the bar on the beach — is the traditional finish, heaving and cheerful. The Tywarnhayle Inn up the road is the alternative. If you'd rather a walk, the coast path to Droskyn Point and on towards St Agnes blows everything off. Dogs: welcome on the beach in winter, less thrilled by the charge — keep them on the lead at the start.
