Short answer: Sennen Cove is a long, sandy, surf-exposed beach just north of Land's End. RNLI lifeguards patrol 10am to 6pm daily from 3 April to 1 November in 2026. Dogs are banned on the beach 10am to 6pm from 15 May to 30 September. There are car parks at the bottom of the hill and a large field car park at the top.
Sennen Cove is the west-facing beach at the bottom of a steep hill, with a working lifeboat station, a handful of cafes and a pub on the front. It is just north of Land's End, so it pairs well with a day on the far west coast. It is also open to Atlantic swell, which makes it popular with surfers and a place to be careful in the water.
Sennen Cove is the one with the village, the facilities and the lifeguards. RNLI describes it as a minute's walk from a village with excellent facilities, and says it is exposed to Atlantic swells and popular with surfers. Gwenver (also spelt Gwynver) is a short distance south along the coast and is a different proposition. Visit Cornwall describes it as walking access only, down what it calls an arduous path through the sand dunes, or from the clifftop and the South West Coast Path, with a small car park above the beach. It has large waves and some of Cornwall's best surfing conditions, and no facilities are listed for it.
For families, small children and anyone who wants a cup of tea nearby, choose Sennen Cove. For experienced surfers and walkers who like a quieter beach, Gwenver is the one. Visit Cornwall's page for Gwenver quotes lifeguard cover from May to September but marks those figures as 2023, so check the RNLI website for current dates before you rely on it.
There are two car parks at the bottom of the hill: one just behind the beach and one at the far end of the cove beyond the lifeboat station. A large field car park sits at the top of the hill, and the walk down from there is steep, which you will feel on the way back up. We could not confirm current prices from a council or operator source, so check the machine or sign. In summer, arrive early, as the cove fills on sunny days.
Without a car, the Land's End Coaster bus runs year-round and stops in Sennen Cove on its route between St Just and Land's End. It is worth considering if you want to combine the beach with the coast path.
Yes. The RNLI's 2026 listing shows lifeguards on duty daily from 3 April to 1 November, 10am to 6pm. Dates can change at short notice, so check the RNLI page before a trip at the edge of the season. Swim or bodyboard between the red and yellow flags, surf between the black and white flags where they are flying, and remember that if there are no flags, there are no lifeguards. Never swim alone.
Cornwall Council bans dogs on Sennen beach between 10am and 6pm from 15 May to 30 September. Outside those dates, and outside those hours in the season, dogs are welcome. Gwenver is not on the council's list of beaches with restrictions, but signs on the day are the final word.
Two schools are based on the front. Sennen Surfing Centre is rated 4.8 from 81 Google reviews, and reviewers praise instructors who kept mixed-age family groups happy. Smart Surf School is rated 5.0 from 126 Google reviews, and reviewers like the relaxed approach and the clear safety briefing. Both have fewer than 150 reviews, but they are the two schools Google lists at the cove, so we have included them. Book ahead for school holidays. Because the beach is exposed, beginners usually do best on smaller days, and your instructor will tell you which day suits.
Sennen Cove Café is rated 4.8 from 410 Google reviews. Reviewers praise the cream tea, the pasty and a chicken ciabatta, and there are benches outside with sea views. It suits families and walkers, and Google lists it open 9:30am to 4pm daily.
Sennen Surf Lodge is rated 4.6 from 176 Google reviews, with a sea-view terrace. Reviewers like the pizzas, the prawn tacos and the coffee. It suits couples and adults after a swim, and it is open 11am to 4pm on Google's listing.
Old Success Inn, Sennen Cove is rated 4.5 from 1,925 Google reviews. It sits right on the cove, and reviewers mention the Sunday roast and the sea view. It suits groups and anyone staying locally, and it is worth booking on weekends.
Up the hill near Land's End, the First & Last Inn is rated 4.3 from 1,434 Google reviews. That is below our usual cut-off, but it is the first and last pub in England, and reviewers mention a play area, a big garden, fish and chips and that dogs are welcome.
Land's End is a short drive or a coast path walk away and has its own car park, shops and food. For other beaches in the area, see our guide to the best beaches near Penzance.
