Surf Lessons for Kids in Cornwall: Minimum Ages by School

2026-10-11·Newquay

Short answer: Most Cornish surf schools take children from 8 in a group lesson. Quiksilver (Newquay) and Stoked (Perranporth) take 7-year-olds. For younger children, Harlyn Surf School runs a £25 Fun Surf for 5 to 7s, and Fistral Beach Surf School teaches from 5 in private lessons.

The question every parent asks: is my child old enough? Here's every school we've checked, sorted by the youngest age they'll take.

From age 5

From age 7

From age 8

Adaptive surfing for disabled children

Big Blue in Bude and Peg's in Perranporth both offer adaptive lessons. See Bude and Perranporth.

Does my child need to be able to swim?

Yes, confidently. Big Blue sets 50 metres as the standard; most schools will ask. Lessons happen in shallow water, but the sea is the sea.

Teenagers and coasteering

Older children who've done a few lessons often love coasteering: Newquay, Tintagel and Port Isaac, west Cornwall.

By town: Newquay · Bude · Perranporth · Padstow.

Prices and minimum ages are the schools' own published figures when we checked (October 2026). They change with the season, so confirm when you book.
