Short answer: In Bude, Big Blue Surf School teaches year-round on Summerleaze Beach, from age 8 (children must be able to swim 50 metres), and runs adaptive lessons for disabled surfers. Freewave Surf Academy teaches at Widemouth Bay, 3 miles south, with taster lessons from £45 (minimum age 8).
Bude has two great learner beaches, Summerleaze in town and Widemouth Bay a few miles south, and a surf school on each.
Freewave Surf Academy, Widemouth Bay. Freewave also runs coasteering at Bossiney, near Tintagel.
Summerleaze is in town, with the sea pool and cafés next to it, so it's easiest with a family. Widemouth is a bigger, open beach with more room for learners on a busy day.
Eight at both schools. For younger children elsewhere in Cornwall: surf lessons for kids, by minimum age.
Bude's sea pool, family beaches and parking.
Prices and minimum ages are the schools' own published figures when we checked (October 2026). They change with the season, so confirm when you book.
