Short answer: Start at Bude Wharf and push the flat towpath inland as far as suits — it's café-to-café walking with The Barge at one end, and you can turn round anywhere without losing anything.
The pram walk Bude was built with
The Bude Canal is a leftover of Victorian engineering that happens to make a perfect modern pram route: dead flat (it's a canal), largely surfaced, and bookended by places to stop. If the beach is a fight with wheels, this is the morning that isn't.
The route
- Start: the Wharf. Parking, and The Barge floating right there for the pre-walk coffee. The lower wharf area itself is worth a lap — lock gates, boats, swans with opinions.
- The towpath inland. Follow the canal away from the sea. The first stretch past the rowing-boat hire and on towards Bude Marshes is the pram-perfect section: level, buggy-width, with the reserve's birdlife alongside.
- Turnaround options. This is an out-and-back you can cut anywhere. The marshes make a short loop of it; pushing on towards Helebridge roughly doubles it to a proper morning — around two miles each way from the wharf. Beyond Helebridge the canal line becomes rougher footpath territory, so that's the sensible pram limit.

Worth knowing with wheels
- Surface: the main towpath is good going in most weather; after sustained rain, expect the odd puddle rather than mud-plugging.
- Water edge: it's a canal — unfenced by nature. Fine with a strapped-in pram; toddlers on foot need the hand-holding rule.
- Wind: the canal valley is the sheltered option when the seafront is blowing — often the deciding vote.
- Facilities: start-of-walk facilities cluster at the wharf end; go before you push.
