Tate St Ives Visitor Guide: Tickets, Hours and Tips

2026-10-20·St Ives

Short answer: Tate St Ives costs £15.50 with donation or £14 without, and is free for visitors aged 18 and under. It is open daily, 10am to 5.20pm. There is no car park, so use St Ives park and ride. The Barbara Hepworth Museum needs a separate ticket (£11 with donation). Some galleries close from November 2026. Allow 90 minutes or more.

Tate St Ives sits above Porthmeor Beach and shows modern and contemporary art, with a strong link to the St Ives artists. Nearby, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is Hepworth's former home, studio and garden. Most visitors do one or both, and each needs its own ticket.

How much are Tate St Ives tickets?

Tate's website lists these prices for Tate St Ives:

Book through the Tate St Ives visit page. One Google reviewer found the price a little disappointing next to the free national Tates, so that is worth knowing if you are comparing.

Tate St Ives opening times

Tate lists Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5.20pm, with no closed days given. There is one change to plan around. Tate says some galleries will close at different times from November 2026 while the collection displays are updated, with the work finishing in early 2027. If you are travelling in winter and want to see particular rooms, check the Tate page first.

What is the Barbara Hepworth Museum and how much is it?

The Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden was Hepworth's home and studio at Trewyn Studio from 1949 until her death in 1975. Tate says most of the bronzes are in the positions where she placed them herself, and the garden was laid out by Hepworth with help from the composer Priaulx Rainier.

Tickets are £11 with donation or £10 without, and concessions are £10 or £9. Entry is free for visitors aged 18 and under, and members and Locals Pass holders go in free. The Tate page does not describe a joint ticket, and says you need an additional ticket for each site. The museum's Tate page gives the same 10am to 5.20pm hours, although Google shows a shorter 4pm close on Saturdays, so check before a Saturday visit.

Where to park for Tate St Ives

Tate St Ives has no car park. It has one free bay in Barnoon car park for blue badge holders, which must be booked at least 24 hours in advance, and the Hepworth Museum has no parking at all. Everyone else should use the park and ride. Read our St Ives parking guide and our park and ride review before you drive down.

Is Tate St Ives accessible?

At Tate, three wheelchairs can be reserved free, at least 24 hours ahead. The lift takes wheelchairs up to 80cm wide and 140cm long. There is a Changing Places toilet near Gallery 1, and hearing loops at the information desks. A Google reviewer notes wheelchair access, though some may need help with the long inclined ramp.

The Hepworth Museum is harder. Tate says there are steps and uneven surfaces, manual wheelchair access is by prior appointment, the lower floor is not wheelchair accessible and mobility scooters are not permitted. Email visiting.stives@tate.org.uk to arrange it. St Ives is steep, so our St Ives with a buggy guide is worth a look.

Can you take dogs to Tate St Ives?

Tate welcomes guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs in the gallery and has drinking bowls. It does not address pet dogs, and the Hepworth page says the same. Our guide to dogs at Tate St Ives has more, and our dog friendly cafés near the harbour suit the rest of the day.

Is Tate St Ives worth it?

Tate St Ives is rated 4.2 from 3,462 Google reviews. Reviewers like the setting by the sand, the sea views from the terrace and café on the upper floor, and the compact layout, and one said it took 90 minutes or more. Others find it small for the price. Our view is that it is worth it if you like modern art or want a dry hour with a view. If you do not, look at our St Ives galleries you can visit free.

The Barbara Hepworth Museum scores higher, with 4.7 from 1,262 Google reviews. Reviewers call it small but perfectly formed, and like seeing the studio left as she had it, and the sub-tropical garden. One advises booking in advance, and another says that was useful but not essential.

How long do you need, and what is nearby?

Tate does not give a visit time, except that its audio introduction runs 10 minutes. Allow 90 minutes for Tate and 45 to 60 minutes for the Hepworth, judging by reviewers.
