Visiting Liskeard for the First Time: Parking, Booking and What to Know

Short answer: Liskeard is a working market town with easy parking and a main-line station. The free moorland car parks at Minions and Golitha fill early in season. The Looe branch line leaves from here.

Liskeard is the gateway to Bodmin Moor's southern edge, and genuinely easy compared with the coastal towns.

Parking in town: straightforward, rarely a problem. This is not Padstow.

The moorland car parks: Minions and Golitha Falls are both free, but small and popular. Before 10am in season. There are two parking areas at Minions rather than one — the second is easy to miss.

Getting here: Liskeard is on the main line, and the Looe branch line leaves from the same station. Genuinely good if you'd rather not drive to the coast.

Booking: the moorland pubs get busy at weekends. The Crows Nest and London Inn both worth booking.

The moor: open grazing land with cattle grids and livestock roaming. Drive accordingly.

How parking charges actually work in Cornwall

There is no single standard fee. Charges vary by car park, by operator and by season, and this catches first-time visitors out constantly. What to know:

• Three different operators. Cornwall Council car parks, private operators and National Trust car parks all charge differently and enforce differently. The signage tells you which you're in.
• Seasonal rates. Many car parks charge more between roughly Easter and October, and several are free or cheaper in winter. Always read the current board rather than assuming.
• National Trust car parks are free to members — bring your card. Non-members pay, and it's often more than a council car park.
• Apps and coins. Most now take card or an app, but some rural and beach car parks are still coin-only, and phone signal can be poor at exactly the places that need an app. Keep some change.
• Beach car parks fill early. On a sunny day in season, the popular ones are full by mid-morning. Before 9:30am is the reliable window.

Do you need to book restaurants?

In peak season — roughly late July to the end of August, plus school holidays and bank holidays — yes, for anywhere you actually want to eat. Cornish restaurants are mostly small, and the good ones fill.

Outside those periods it's far more relaxed, and you can often walk in. The exceptions that are worth booking year-round are the well-known destination restaurants and anywhere doing a Sunday roast.

A practical point people miss: many Cornish kitchens stop serving earlier than you'd expect, particularly out of season. Turning up at 8:30pm in October can mean finding the kitchen closed even where the bar is open.

Are places well signposted?

Main roads and towns, yes. Beaches, coves and smaller attractions, often not — and satnavs can be actively unhelpful in Cornwall.

The specific problem: satnavs routinely route drivers down single-track lanes that are technically the shortest way and practically a nightmare, particularly with a hire car in summer. Following brown tourist signs is usually better than following the satnav for the last few miles.

Phone signal is genuinely patchy in west Cornwall and on the moors, so downloading offline maps before you travel is worth the two minutes.

Driving in Cornwall for the first time

• Lanes are narrower than you expect, often with high hedges and no visibility. Passing places exist; using them politely is the local etiquette.
• Journeys take longer than the map says. A rough rule: add half again to any estimate in peak season.
• The A30 is the spine. It gets genuinely congested on summer Saturdays when the holiday lets change over — avoid travelling between roughly 10am and 2pm on a Saturday if you can.
