Bodmin Access Guide: Buggy and Wheelchair Tips

2026-09-25·Bodmin

Short answer: Bodmin works for buggies and wheelchairs if you choose carefully. Bodmin Jail has platform lifts and an accessible toilet. Bodmin General station is level with two wheelchair spaces (pre-book), but Bodmin Parkway has no step-free route. Lanhydrock has 29 accessible bays and a buggy shuttle. The Camel Trail is surfaced and virtually level.

Bodmin is a good town for visitors who need level ground, lifts and proper toilets, but the answers change a lot from one place to the next. This Bodmin access guide for buggies and wheelchairs works through the places people actually go: the jail, the steam railway, Lanhydrock, the Camel Trail and the car parks, using the access statements the venues publish.

Where can you park in Bodmin with a wheelchair or buggy?

Blue Badge holders are not automatically free to park in Cornwall Council car parks. The council says you pay the normal fee unless your vehicle is registered under its exemption scheme or is specially adapted for a disabled person. It also says to display a valid badge with the clock set to your arrival time whether or not you pay, and that if no disabled bay is free you can use an ordinary space unless it is reserved for something else. Paying for a stay also gets you an extra hour, so two hours paid gives three.

Priory Car Park is the practical town-centre choice. It has 4.2 from 118 Google reviews, and one reviewer mentions plenty of disabled parking. It sits beside a park with a pond and a children's play area, and Bodmin Town Museum is across the road. The council's Bodmin car parks page has current tariffs and bay information, so look there before you set out.

Is Bodmin Jail wheelchair and buggy friendly?

Bodmin Jail (4.4 from 7,539 Google reviews) publishes a detailed access page. Its key points:

The jail also warns that some parts may not suit people who are photosensitive and can have light-triggered seizures, and asks them to call before visiting. Our guide to dogs at Bodmin Jail has more on the dog rules.

Can wheelchairs use the Bodmin and Wenford steam railway?

Yes, but only from the right station. Bodmin Railway's access statement says Bodmin General (4.2 from 160 Google reviews) is level throughout, with step-free access from the forecourt through the booking hall to the platform. A few forecourt spaces are reserved for Blue Badge holders, and there is an accessible toilet and a baby changing area on the platform. The coffee shop and gift shop have level or ramped access from the platform, though manoeuvring space is limited.

Why should wheelchair users avoid Bodmin Parkway?

Bodmin Parkway is reached from the car park and platforms by a footbridge with steps. Bodmin Railway says there is no step-free or ramped route, so wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility cannot board or alight there, and it recommends starting at Bodmin General. On the main line, Cornwall Council said in September 2025 that it would put up to £200,000 towards an accessible footbridge, but only if the government approves the project, after a feasibility study. No delivery date was given, so do not assume a step-free crossing until the station says so.

Is Lanhydrock accessible for wheelchairs and buggies?

Lanhydrock is just outside town, and the National Trust access page is thorough. The main car park has 29 designated accessible spaces and the Respryn car park has two. Visitor reception is about 270 metres from the main car park and 350 metres from the house, and the route from reception to the house goes up a steep hill, so an access buggy runs between reception and the gatehouse. There is also a buggy park at the house bag drop and a buggy-friendly route through the gardens.

Our guide to dogs at Lanhydrock covers the dog rules, and the winter programme is in Lanhydrock Winter Welcome 2026/27.

Is the Camel Trail suitable for wheelchairs from Bodmin?

Cornwall Council describes the Camel Trail as a surfaced and virtually level multi-use trail, suitable for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users. The Wadebridge to Bodmin (Boscarne) section is 5.75 miles, and the council lists trail car parks at the Borough Arms in Dunmere, Scarletts Well and Grogley Halt. It lists toilets at Wenfordbridge, alongside the trail at Wadebridge and in Padstow town centre, so there are none at Boscarne. Shared use with cyclists is the thing to plan around at weekends. Is the town centre easy with a pushchair or wheelchair?

The Experience Bodmin project has looked at how hard it is to get around Fore Street with limited mobility: councillors, including two wheelchair users, took part in a town-centre accessibility day run by Access Cornwall, and the town council has made access a priority. Plan routes between the Priory car park and the shops with that in mind, and ask venues about step-free entrances before you arrive.

Is Bodmin Town Museum a good wet-day stop?

Bodmin Town Museum at 2 Mount Folly is rated 4.7 from 79 Google reviews, and entry is free, with donations welcome. Local press reported it open Monday to Friday from 10.30am to 4.30pm and Saturdays from 10.30am to 2.30pm for the 2026 season, which runs until Saturday 31 October, so check whether it has reopened for 2027 before you plan a spring visit. Reviewers mention a children's trail and local history displays. The museum has not published an access statement that we could find, so call 01208 77067 before bringing a wheelchair.
