Things to Do in Mousehole: Tide, History and Walks

2026-09-29·Mousehole

Short answer: The best things to do in Mousehole are to walk the harbour at low tide when it drains to sand, visit the tidal Rock Pool and the Penlee Lifeboat Memorial Garden, browse the galleries and walk the coast path to Lamorna Cove. Allow two hours for the village or a full day with the 4.7-mile Lamorna circuit.

Mousehole (said "Mowzel") is a harbour village of about 700 people, a few miles south of Penzance, and almost everything you can do here is arranged around the tide. At high water the harbour is a lake of boats; at low water it drains to sand. This guide to things to do in Mousehole is organised the way locals plan a day, by tide and by how long you have.

How long do you need in Mousehole?

Two hours covers the harbour, a coffee and a wander round the lanes. A half day adds the coast path or the Penlee garden. A full day lets you walk to Lamorna Cove and back, which is a 4.7-mile circuit. Parking and the narrow lanes are the pinch points, so read the first-time visitor guide before you drive in.

What can you do at low tide in Mousehole?

Low tide is when the village shows its best trick. Two small sandy beaches appear inside the harbour quays, and a long pebble beach runs east towards Penlee Point. Families dig and paddle, and children look for crabs in the rock pools at the edges. There is no lifeguard, so keep an eye on small children near the water. Check tide times before you go, because when the tide is in the sand disappears. More in our guide to the harbour beach.

The tidal Mousehole Rock Pool on The Parade is the other low-tide draw. It is a natural pool that, according to a 2020 local report, was built up in 1970 with the help of a Mousehole man, Harry Pender. It is used by sea swimmers and by families, and the same report says crabs and seals visit it. Visit Cornwall recommends it for wild swimming. It is a sea pool, so the water is cold and conditions change with the tide. Dogs are allowed on the beach, but Visit Cornwall notes a seasonal ban between 10am and 6pm in July and August, so follow the signs.

What is there to do at high tide?

Walk the quays and the lanes

The harbour wall gives a view across Mount's Bay, and St Clement's Isle sits about 350 metres offshore from the harbour entrance. In winter the harbour mouth is closed with heavy timber baulks to protect the boats, and the date is set each year (see Mousehole in winter). Keep back from the quays in big seas.

Galleries, shops and the Ark

The lanes behind the harbour hold small galleries and craft shops. A local handbook names the Tyler Gallery, the Mowzer Gallery and Coast Gifts and Interiors. The Ark (5.0 from 62 Google reviews, a small sample) is a jewellery workshop on St Clements Terrace that reviewers call magical. Opening days vary, so check before you go.

Eat something local

Crab sandwiches, cream teas, pasties and Newlyn fish are the local pitches. Good starting points are Mousehole Deli & Kitchen for harbour views, the Ship Inn for a pint and a fire by the quay, and 2 Fore Street for seafood. Our where to eat in Mousehole guide goes through them.

What is the history of Mousehole, and what can you see?

The village is first recorded in 1283, and pilchards were being exported to France by 1302. In 1595 the village was attacked by Spanish raiders, and the Keigwin Arms was the only building left standing. A plaque outside records that Squire Jenkyn Keigwin was killed there defending the house. Dylan Thomas and his wife Caitlin spent their honeymoon at the Lobster Pot guest house on the harbourside.

The lifeboat story matters here. On 19 December 1981 the eight crew of the Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne were lost going to the aid of the Union Star. The Penlee Lifeboat Memorial Garden sits at Penlee Point, about 0.4 miles from the village, where the lifeboat once launched, with views across the bay. See the memorial and the 19 December lights.

Can you take a boat trip from Mousehole?

Visit Cornwall lists boat trips out to the cave that gives the village its name, and a local handbook names Cormorant Cruising, which departs from South Quay. The trips are seasonal and the harbour is closed with baulks in winter, so check before relying on one. Mousehole Cave is marked on the map, but the safest way to see it is from the water on a boat trip rather than by climbing down to it.

What walks start in Mousehole?

Is the Wild Bird Hospital worth visiting?

Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital (4.6 from 68 Google reviews) is on Raginnis Hill, a steep walk up from the harbour. Visit Cornwall lists it as an attraction. But the charity says it is planning maintenance and renovation over the winter months, ahead of its centenary in 2028, and cannot have patients on site during that work. Ring 01736 731386 before you climb the hill.

What is Mousehole famous for at Christmas?

The harbour lights run in 2026 from 10 December to 3 January, and they go off for an hour on 19 December in memory of the lifeboat crew. On 23 December, Tom Bawcock's Eve marks the legend behind stargazy pie and Antonia Barber's children's book The Mousehole Cat. See the lights guide and Tom Bawcock's Eve 2026. Do not drive in during December. Park in Penzance and take the bus.

What else is nearby?

Newlyn and Penzance are on the bus 6 route. Browse the Mousehole, Penzance and Marazion town pages for more.
