Short answer: In winter Mousehole keeps its pubs and a few restaurants open: the Ship Inn and the Old Coastguard daily, Mousehole Deli & Kitchen daily, the plant-based Orange Café Wednesday to Sunday and the Old Pilchard Press Tuesday to Sunday. Seasonal cafés like the Rock Pool and Jessie's Dairy cut back. The baulks close the harbour from 29 October, and the lights run 10 December to 3 January.
Winter is Mousehole's best season if you ask the locals: quiet lanes, storms on the harbour wall, and then December, when the whole village lights up.
On current listings (October 2026); winter hours can change, so check before a special trip:
Every winter, heavy timber baulks are lowered across the harbour mouth to protect the boats from storms. In 2026 they go back in on Thursday 29 October, weather permitting, and the boats come out of the water after half term.
The Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital on Raginnis Hill, founded in 1928, plans maintenance and renovation over the quieter winter months with no patients on site. Check with the charity (01736 731386) before visiting.
