Short answer: Mousehole suits children up to about ten: the harbour drains to sand at low tide, there is a tidal rock pool, crabbing and shell hunting, The Ark shop and ice cream, with children's menus at the Ship Inn and 2 Fore Street. There is no lifeguard. Teens do better on the coast path to Lamorna or a bus to Penzance.
A harbour that turns into a beach at low tide is hard to beat for children, and Mousehole's does exactly that. It is also a village of narrow lanes, a cold sea pool and a coast path with cliff edges, so a good day here depends on matching the activity to the age of the child and the state of the tide. This is Mousehole with kids, things to do, sorted by age.
Yes, for toddlers up to about ten, with the right planning. The sandy harbour at low tide, rock pools, crab-watching, a quirky shop and ice cream fill a morning easily. Older children and teenagers need more, and the best answer for them is the coast path or a bus to Penzance. There are no theme-park-style attractions here, which is the point.
Inside the quays, the harbour drains to two small sandy beaches reachable only at low tide. Visit Cornwall calls it a sandy beach that families enjoy. Buckets and spades are sold by Webbs Dairy Ice-cream (4.1 from 33 Google reviews), right on North Cliff, according to a reviewer. There is no lifeguard, so stay within arm's reach. Our harbour beach guide has the tide detail.
A holiday guide lists crabbing from the harbour wall, shell hunting and a scattering of rock pools as things for children to do, and equipment for crabbing is sold locally. The pebble beach east of the harbour is best explored at low tide. Wear shoes with grip, because the rocks are slippery. For more technique, our crabbing and rock pooling near Penzance guide covers it.

The coast path to Lamorna Cove is the best option. It is a 4.7-mile circuit graded challenging, with plenty of ups and downs and muddy sections, so it is for sure-footed teens, not small children. See our Lamorna walk. The flat route to Penzance is better for younger legs. Cold-water swimming at the pool suits confident swimmers. In Newlyn and Penzance, Newlyn Art Gallery has free entry for children, and Penlee House Gallery & Museum admits children free. Bus 6 takes about 20 minutes.
The Ship Inn (4.4 from 1,010 Google reviews) offers a children's menu, welcomes dogs in the bar and has a fire. 2 Fore Street (4.6 from 967 Google reviews) has a children's menu too, and holiday guides advise booking. At the Deli, a reviewer said the children loved the burgers and the dressed crab. For takeaway, Jessie's Dairy sells pasties and Roskilly's ice cream. See where to eat in Mousehole.
Mostly a matter of attention. The sea is cold, there is no lifeguard, and the lanes are shared with cars. North Quay car park is a narrow breakwater beside the water, so hold hands there. Dogs are allowed on the beach, with a seasonal ban between 10am and 6pm in July and August. The public toilets on North Cliff are open all year and have disabled facilities. See the access guide if you have a pushchair.
The harbour lights run from 10 December to 3 January and many children love them, but the village fills by late afternoon. Park in Penzance and take the bus (see the lights guide). For October half term, our Penzance half term guide fits well with a Mousehole morning, and our Mousehole and Penzance town pages cover the rest. The harbour mouth is closed with timber baulks over winter, so boat trips stop, and the winter guide has the detail.
