St Michael's Mount With a Pushchair or Toddler: What You Can and Can't Do

Short answer: The harbour and village are fine with a pushchair if you take the boat; the climb to the castle is not — it's steep, cobbled, has no rails in places and pushchairs are not allowed. Under-5s will need carrying for stretches.

St Michael's Mount is a brilliant place to take children, and a difficult place to take a pushchair. The two things are both true, and it helps to know where the line is before you pay for tickets.

Where a pushchair works

The island's harbour and the little village around it are flat enough. If you arrive by boat you can wheel straight off onto the quay, look at the boats, get an ice cream and sit in the courtyard. The causeway itself is bumpable but rough — if the tide's out, a sling or carrier is a much easier crossing than fighting cobbles with a buggy.

Where it doesn't

Pushchairs are not allowed on the path up to the castle, and the Mount says so plainly. The climb is steep, uneven and in places has no handrail; staff will ask you to leave the buggy at the bottom. Under-5s will need carrying for stretches, and honestly some under-7s will too by the end. A carrier on your back is the single best piece of kit for the day.

The garden is easier than the castle

If you only do one, the sub-tropical garden on the south-facing rock is the better bet with small children: still steps, but shorter bursts, and the plants and sea views hold attention longer than furniture and portraits. Garden and castle are ticketed separately and both need pre-booking in season.

A plan that works

• Book the earliest slot. Fewer people on the narrow paths.
• Cross by boat one way if you can — it's the highlight for most children and it's short enough that nobody gets bored.
• Do the garden, or the castle, not both. Two hours on the island is plenty for this age.
• Back on the mainland, Marazion Beach has a playground above it and shallow water, which is where the afternoon should go.

Toilets and feeding

There are toilets and a café at the island harbour, and toilets by the Folleyfield Long Stay Car Park on the mainland. There's nothing between the harbour and the castle, so go before you climb.
