Short answer: Bodmin is in the middle of Cornwall, so both coasts are close. The nearest sandy beach is Polzeath, about 9 miles, for surf and rock pools. Daymer Bay, next to it, is calmer for small children. Par Sands, about 12 miles south, is big, flat and shallow. Lantic Bay, near Polruan, is the beautiful one, with a steep walk in.
Bodmin is the most central town in Cornwall, which makes it a good base for both coasts: the Atlantic surf beaches about half an hour north, and the calmer south coast about the same the other way.
A gently sloping, family-friendly beach near Rock, roughly ten miles from Bodmin — calm water and dunes make it a good choice for younger children on a day trip out.

A large, flat sandy beach near St Austell, roughly twelve miles from Bodmin — good for young children given the gentle, shallow water.

A stunning, secluded cove reached by a steep National Trust walk near Polruan, roughly fifteen miles from Bodmin — a proper reward for the effort of getting there.

A wide, dramatic surf beach roughly nine miles from Bodmin, with caves and rock pools to explore — the nearest proper sandy beach for a Bodmin-based day trip.

Polzeath and Daymer both have beach car parks that fill in summer. Lantic Bay is a walk from the National Trust car park above. Back in town: Bodmin on a rainy day.
