Best Sunday Roast in Marazion: Where to Go and What to Ask

The Cutty Sark Restaurant and Bar

Under the Marazion Hotel on the Square: the best-value proper dinner in the village, with fresh fish, mussels, a well-cooked steak and a Sunday roast people cross the county for. Book.

The Mexico Inn

Ten minutes' drive at Long Rock: the food pub of the area, with pies and Sunday roasts that regulars rate the best in west Cornwall. Dog-friendly, no car park but easy street parking.

Victoria Inn

Perranuthnoe's pink village pub, a short walk up from the beach — a proper log-burner local with good burgers and roasts and real ales. Book on Sundays.

Also worth a Sunday

The Godolphin, Marazion — The big bay window looking straight at the Mount is the best table in Marazion, and the fish and chips are good. Service can wobble when it's busy. Open from 8am for breakfast.

The Kings Arms — Small, proper village pub on the Square with big portions — crab sandwiches, mussels and a fish-finger sandwich that's more than a lunch. Fills up fast; book for dinner.

This is the one piece of advice that matters most. Cornish pubs are small, Sunday lunch is the busiest service of the week, and most kitchens cook a fixed number of roasts. When they're gone, they're gone — often by two o'clock.

Out of season this catches people out even more, not less. Fewer places serve roasts at all in winter, so demand concentrates on the ones that do.

What to ask when you book

• What time does the roast run until? Many kitchens stop at 3pm or when they sell out, whichever comes first.
• Is there a vegetarian or vegan option? Cornish pubs are better at this than they used to be, but a nut roast is not a given.
• Can they do gluten-free gravy? Standard gravy is thickened with flour. This is the question that catches coeliacs out most often.
