Christmas at St Michael's Mount and the Marazion Lights: What Happens and When

2026-09-06·Marazion

Short answer: Marazion's lights are switched on in early December with a small evening in the Square. St Michael's Mount is causeway-only in winter with the castle open on limited days — check its calendar for Christmas events and the exact dates. Dogs are welcome on the island in winter, and the beach is dog-friendly all day.

This is one of our town-by-town winter guides — the full county picture is in Christmas and New Year in Cornwall 2026.

The Marazion lights

Marazion switches its Christmas lights on in early December — an evening in Marazion Square with mulled wine, carols and a crowd of locals, and the lights along Fore Street lit together. It's very small, very friendly and takes an hour; the Mount lit in the dark behind is the reason to stay for a drink after.

2026 dates: not yet announced — usually the first weekend of December; Marazion Town Council posts it. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

The Mount at Christmas

St Michael's Mount runs winter opening with the castle open on limited days, and has held Christmas events in some years — decorations in the castle, carols in the church, occasional evening openings. Because it's causeway-only from November (the boats stop at the end of October), every visit depends on the tide; the Mount's daily access calendar gives the walking window. If the Mount announces a Christmas event, book the moment it goes on sale — capacity is tiny. Dogs are welcome on the island through the winter season, just not in the castle or gardens.

2026 dates: winter opening and any Christmas events not yet announced — St Michael's Mount publishes its winter calendar in the autumn. We update this line the moment organisers confirm.

The winter causeway walk

On a cold, still December morning with the causeway just clear and nobody on it, the walk out to the harbour and back is the best thing in Mount's Bay, and it's free. Check the calculator, cross early in the window, and don't linger past the closing time — there are no boats to rescue you in winter.

What's open

Boxing Day

Two miles of beach with dogs allowed all day, the RSPB Marazion Marsh for winter birds, and a walk along the bay to Penzance for the Mousehole lights in the evening. Our Marazion guide has the rest.
