Bonfire Night in Helston and Nearby: The Options

Short answer: Helston has the pick of the Lizard's Bonfire Nights: the town's own Underlane bonfire with a sparkler area, RNAS Culdrose's display on the 5th, and the village bonfires at Coverack and the Lizard a short drive away. 2026 dates land in October.

Helston sits in the middle of Cornwall's densest cluster of Bonfire Nights — its own community bonfire, a naval air station's display, and the Lizard's village bonfires all within a short drive. The choice is really about what kind of night you want.

The options, compared

• Helston's own — Underlane. The town's community bonfire night: a few pounds in, free parking, and a dedicated sparkler area that makes it one of the more small-child-friendly nights around. The local, low-faff choice.
• RNAS Culdrose — the naval air station's display just outside town, traditionally on the 5th itself. The bigger-bang option.
• Coverack — twenty-odd minutes onto the Lizard: bonfire on the beach at 5:30pm, low-noise fireworks at 6:30pm, food on the green. The one for toddlers and nervous dogs — genuinely the gentlest Bonfire Night in Cornwall.
• The Lizard — the recreation ground, gates 5:30pm, fire around 7pm, and the honour of the most southerly fireworks in Britain.

Choosing

Small children who like sparklers but not bangs: Underlane, or Coverack for the softest version. A proper display: Culdrose. The story to tell afterwards: the Lizard, for the most-southerly claim. And nothing stops you doing an early beach bonfire at Coverack and catching a later display on the way home — the timings stack.

The practical bits

• Fields in November: wellies, layers, torch. Arrive for the bonfire, not the fireworks, and you'll park and place easily.
• Cash for gates and food stalls across all of these.
• Dogs stay home everywhere except Coverack — and even there, judge your own dog honestly.
