Where to Watch the Sunset Near Helston

Short answer: Head for the Lizard's west-facing coast: Mullion Cove's tiny harbour with its serpentine cliffs is the most atmospheric, Lizard Point the most dramatic, and the west-facing beaches near Helston the easiest.

Why the Lizard

Helston sits at the neck of the Lizard, and the peninsula's west coast faces straight across Mount's Bay to the open sea — sunset country, fifteen to twenty-five minutes from town.

The spots

• Mullion Cove — a stunning little working harbour walled by dark serpentine cliffs; at sunset the harbour walls glow and the island offshore goes black. The most atmospheric spot on the peninsula, and short walking from the car park.
• Lizard Point — the most southerly point of mainland Britain: dramatic clifftop, seabirds, and sea on three sides. Better for the golden hour than the final minutes, which the western headlands partly block — go for the light, stay for the dusk.

Timing it: sunset falls around 7pm in mid-September, drifts towards 6pm through October, then jumps to around 4:45pm when the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October. Arrive twenty minutes early — the colour often peaks just after the sun has gone.

Honest notes

Lizard lanes are narrow and dark — allow extra time for the drive back, and watch for walkers. Clifftop paths are unfenced: stay well back, especially in the half-light. With a dog, leads on the clifftops.
