Short answer: The best walks near Penzance all start at the station: a level 2.7 miles along the sea wall to Marazion, 3.4 miles via Newlyn to Mousehole (bus 6 back), a 2.8 mile Town Trail loop, and a 6.8 mile route via Marazion Marsh, where starlings roost at dusk from October to December in some years.
Every good walk near Penzance starts within a few hundred metres of the railway station, which is the whole point. You do not need a car, and the paths lead east to St Michael's Mount, west to Newlyn and Mousehole, and inland over the marsh. This guide groups the best walks near Penzance by what you want from the day, with distances, surfaces and the bits that catch people out, such as the A30 crossing and the way back.
The Penzance to Marazion seafront walk is the one to do. The South West Coast Path lists it at 2.7 miles, easy and virtually level on a surfaced path suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. You start at the station main car park (TR18 2LT) on a footway shared with the National Cycle Network, inland of the sea wall and alongside the railway. After a few hundred metres the path rises onto the sea wall, and the views open across Mount's Bay to St Michael's Mount. It ends at the car park at the edge of Marazion. One tip from the path guide: do not take the sea wall directly from the station car park, because it is a dead end.
Regular paths lead down to Long Rock beach, where dogs are allowed all year, according to the same page. The bird reserve at RSPB Marazion Marsh is nearby. A very regular bus runs back from Marazion, and our guide to Marazion without a car has the details. Remember that the causeway to St Michael's Mount is passable only at low tide. If you want more, the Penzance Promenade also continues towards Newlyn in the other direction.
The South West Coast Path lists this walk at 3.4 miles one way, easy, on tarmac pavements and a cycleway. The route follows the promenade through Wherry Town, goes round Newlyn harbour past the South Pier, then along The Strand and Fore Street, and takes the cycleway past the memorial and Penlee Point to Mousehole. Bus 6 runs from Mousehole to Penzance bus station about every 30 minutes, according to the path guide, so you can come back by bus or on foot.
You can break the walk with a stop at Newlyn Art Gallery in Newlyn, which lists opening Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, with a charge for admission, so check its website first. Another option is the Tolcarne Inn, and in Mousehole there is the Rock Pool Cafe, rated 4.6 from 912 Google reviews. Our full Penzance to Mousehole guide covers timings, and Mousehole in winter says what is open there.
The route that links Penzance and Marazion via Marazion Marsh is 6.8 miles. Its own South West Coast Path page rates it moderate, with coastal path, inland footpaths that may be wet or muddy and quiet roads, and only a gentle ascent and descent. It starts at the Marazion station car park (TR17 0AA), follows St Michael's Way across the RSPB Marazion Marsh, crosses the railway and the A394, then goes to the A30. You cross the A30 with care, follow footpaths through Ludgvan and the lanes via Eglos and Tregarthen, and descend Posses Lane, crossing the A30 again and using a footbridge over the railway to reach the coast path and Penzance. The return is on foot along the sea wall.
On the reserve, dogs are allowed only on public footpaths, must be on a lead and kept out of open water, according to the RSPB. In some years starlings roost there from October to December, with murmurations visible at dusk, and it is an important wintering site for bitterns. The RSPB does not run a car park here, but three private car parks are within 100 m. There are no toilets on the reserve, and the nearest public toilets are in the Marazion station car park.
A 2.8-mile easy loop from the station car park that works well on a wet-ish day, according to the South West Coast Path. It passes the harbour, the Jubilee Pool, the Yacht Inn and St Mary's Church, then goes through Morrab Gardens and along the promenade towards Newlyn. It continues through Penlee Park to St John's Hall, climbs Clarence Street, and returns through Causewayhead and the town centre to Wharf Road. The route has some road crossings and steps up to the main road and down to the promenade, and the churchyard is not suitable for visitors with mobility difficulties, who are advised to go around it via Under Chapel Yard.
The coast path west gets harder quickly. The South West Coast Path's four-day Penzance to St Ives itinerary, based in Penzance, is rated challenging throughout.
