Short answer: In winter the Mevagissey Aquarium (open late May to October) and the Fowey ferry (season ends in early October) are shut, and the museum and model railway are seasonal. Pubs such as The Fountain Inn and Harbour Tavern, bakeries and Heligan carry on. Council car parks are free from 4pm to 9am.
Mevagissey in winter is a working fishing harbour first and a holiday village second. The aquarium and the Fowey ferry have shut for the season, the quay is quiet, and the council car parks stop charging at 4pm. That leaves a smaller list of things to do, but it is a list worth knowing before you drive down the valley. Here it is in three groups: closed, open, and worth ringing first.
Three pubs sit within a minute of each other near the quay. The Fountain Inn has 4.6 from 767 Google reviews and is a small pub in an alley with real ale and an old resident cat called Alfie. A reviewer who dropped in at 2.30pm in August was told food service had ended at 2pm, so go for lunch rather than a late snack. Harbour Tavern on Jetty Street has 4.5 from 1,260 Google reviews, with reviewers praising its separate fryer for gluten free fish and chips. A local guide says it serves pub food all year round. Book if you want a table on a dark, wet evening, as reviewers describe booking online and getting a quick reply. The Ship Inn on Fore Street has 4.5 from 1,001 Google reviews and, per recent reviews, is under new management with scallops, fish pie and a burger on the menu. Reviewers mention live acoustic music, and a local guide lists a Tuesday quiz and Saturday live music, so ask which nights are on. For Sunday lunch, see our Sunday roast guide.
The Cornish Bakery, Teacup Tearoom and The Lighthouse Cafe all appear in Tripadvisor's 2026 lists of Mevagissey cafes and takeaways. She Sells Mevagissey is the one with a winter plan: a local guide says it opens in the daytime from September to June and runs supper nights through the winter, including French raclette evenings, which a reviewer also describes. Opening hours shrink in the coldest months, so ring or check before you plan around any of them. The smaller counters, such as Seaosk and The Loft Hatch, depend on the weather and the owners' hours. The ice cream kiosks, including Ruby's Ice Cream and The Blue Hut, may keep reduced winter hours or close for a spell.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan is the biggest winter draw close to the village. Its calendar lists opening from 10am to 5pm on most days up to 31 October, with last entry at 3.30pm. The page we read does not show the November to March hours, so check the monthly calendar before you drive over. Heligan Kitchen and Bakery is open daily 9am to 4pm and the Steward's House daily 10am to 3pm, and Sunday roasts are back on the Kitchen's menu. Dogs on leads are welcome all year, including in both cafes. Tickets are listed at £28.20 for adults, £10 for children aged 5 to 17 and free for under-fives.
The evening event is the Night Garden, which runs on selected dates from 13 November 2026 to 2 January 2027. Entry is by timed slot from 4.15pm, adults are £23.60 and children aged 3 to 16 are £14.20. On event days, daytime visitors have to leave when the gardens close at 3pm, with last entry at 1.30pm. See our Heligan Night Garden guide for the detail.
Partly. The two council car parks on River Street and Church Street do not charge between 4pm and 9am. Between 9am and 4pm the rates are 60p for up to 30 minutes, £1.30 for an hour, £2.50 for two hours and £3.40 for three, which is the maximum stay. Neither page lists a separate winter tariff. Because they are short stay, a long lunch plus a walk can run out the clock. Larger car parks may differ, so check the machine. Our parking guide lists the choices.
Yes, if you like harbours when they are empty. The best winter day is a short one: a bakery coffee, a walk round the harbour wall of almost a mile, a pub lunch and the free parking after 4pm. It is not a day for hours of attractions. The Mevagissey Museum is a seasonal charity museum, and one guide gives its season as Easter to October, so phone before you plan around it. The Mevagissey Model Railway is listed on one guide as open March to November, with weekends only at February half term, and another listing warns it may close for maintenance. Phone ahead for both.
The Pentewan Valley Trail is a flat, mostly hard surfaced former railway line of about 3.5 miles, and winter is a calm time for it. Dog rules ease on the beaches in winter: Cornwall Council's ban at Portmellon runs from 1 July to 31 August only, and 360 Cornwall lists dogs at Pentewan Beach in winter only, though the holiday park that owns the beach sets its own rules. At Eden, the Christmas Lights Pass is £12.50 for adults and free for under 16s on selected dates from 20 November to 2 January, and an admission ticket is also needed. The ice rink runs on selected dates from 18 October to 21 February, with adult tickets from £11.50. For the village at Christmas, see Mevagissey Christmas lights. For general planning, the Mevagissey guide is a good start.
The harbour wall is exposed and the alleys are steep, so bring a windproof layer and shoes with grip. If the weather turns, our Mevagissey rainy day guide has indoor options.
Yes, the village stays open, with pubs, bakeries, cafes and nearby Heligan operating, though small harbour counters may cut their days. The aquarium and the Fowey ferry are shut for the season.
No. The harbour site says it is open daily 10am to 6pm from late May to the end of October.
No winter sailings are listed. The operator's timetable runs from May to early October, and the ferry does not run in bad weather.
Heligan's calendar lists 10am to 5pm on most days to 31 October, with last entry at 3.30pm. Use its opening times calendar for November to March. Night Garden evenings run on selected dates from 13 November 2026 to 2 January 2027.
Not entirely. Cornwall Council's River Street and Church Street car parks do not charge between 4pm and 9am, but from 9am to 4pm they charge 60p for 30 minutes up to £3.40 for 3 hours, all year.
