How the rules actually work

Like most popular Cornish beaches, the busiest, lifeguarded sections nearest the town and main car parks carry seasonal daytime dog restrictions through the summer months, while the quieter stretches beyond stay open year-round. The signs at each beach entrance state the current rule for that section — read the one where you step on, because the boundaries aren't obvious from the sand. Out of season, the whole three miles is open and this entire article simplifies to "go".

The stretches

Hayle Towans (town end) — closest parking, busiest sand, and where summer restrictions bite. In season: early morning or evening.
Upton and Gwithian Towans — the middle miles, backed by the dunes nature reserve. Quieter, wilder, and the reliable off-lead heart of the beach; the dune paths add rabbit-scented inland loops.
Godrevy (far end) — National Trust, with the lighthouse view. One crucial exception: seals haul out around Godrevy Point and Mutton Cove — dogs on leads near the point, always, and never on the seal beaches. That rule protects the seals and, frankly, your dog.

The estuary exception

The Hayle Estuary on the town side is an RSPB reserve and one of Britain's most important winter bird sites — it looks like tempting extra sand at low tide, but it's leads-on, disturbance-free territory. The beach side of the town is for running; the estuary side is for looking.

Practicalities

Big flat beaches mean a fast incoming tide across the lower sand — keep half an eye on it during long fetch sessions. Fresh water's worth carrying; the run is longer than it looks.
