What to Do in Mousehole When It Rains: Indoor Ideas

2026-10-11·Mousehole

Short answer: When it rains in Mousehole, shelter at the Ship Inn (fire, dogs in the bar), the Mousehole Deli & Kitchen (upstairs harbour window) or a tea room, then browse the small galleries. For a longer indoor day, bus 6 reaches Penlee House (Monday to Saturday, adults £8, children free) and Newlyn Art Gallery in about 20 minutes.

Mousehole takes about twenty minutes to walk round, which is great on a dry day and a problem on a wet one. When the rain sets in off Mount's Bay you have two real choices: settle in somewhere warm for a long lunch, or use the village as a base and ride the bus to the galleries in Penzance and Newlyn. Here is what to do in Mousehole when it rains, sorted by how much of the day you want to fill.

Is Mousehole worth visiting in the rain?

Briefly, yes, if you plan it as a pub-and-gallery day rather than a beach day. Visit Cornwall's own list of Mousehole attractions is mostly outdoors, so the weather decides which ones work. Pick a day when the wind is not whipping spray over the harbour wall, and in a big sea stay back from the quays. If the forecast is truly grim, spend the morning in Penzance and come out for lunch.

Where can you shelter and eat in Mousehole?

The Ship Inn, for a fire and a long lunch

The Ship Inn (4.4 from 1,010 Google reviews) is the big harbourfront pub on South Cliff. Holiday guides describe a crackling fireplace for lazy lunches, a children's menu, and dogs welcome in the bar area. Reviewers praise the Sunday lunch. It is the obvious wet-day pick, so expect it full by 1pm and book if you can. More on the roast in our Sunday roast guide.

Mousehole Deli & Kitchen, for a window seat

Mousehole Deli & Kitchen (4.5 from 782 Google reviews) has an upstairs dining room that reviewers say looks over the harbour, which one December visitor used to watch the weather while eating scallops and a stargazy pie. It is a deli too, so you can browse local produce. A local directory says it runs cook-school workshops and occasional supper clubs upstairs, so ask what is on.

Tea rooms for a dry cream tea

The Old Pilchard Press Cafe (4.6 from 109 Google reviews) is a small tea room in an old pilchard press near the quay, and reviewers describe warm scones and a cosy room. Four Teas Cafe (4.6 from 236 Google reviews) is the 1940s-themed alternative, with only a few tables. Both are small, so arrive early on a wet day and check that they are open. For the full list, see our cream tea guide.

What shops and galleries are open in Mousehole in the rain?

The village has a clutch of small galleries and gift shops along the harbour road and the lanes. A local handbook names the Tyler Gallery (contemporary art by Cornish artists), the Mowzer Gallery (paintings and glassware), Coast Gifts and Interiors (Cornish artisan gifts) and the Mousehole Gift Shop on Quay Street. The Ark (5.0 from 62 Google reviews, a small sample) is a jewellery maker's workshop and shop on St Clements Terrace that reviewers say children and adults both love. Opening days are limited and several shops close early out of season, so treat this as a pleasant browse and check before you go.

Can you visit the Wild Bird Hospital when it rains?

Not as a wet-day plan. Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital (4.6 from 68 Google reviews) is on Raginnis Hill, a steady climb above the village. Visit Cornwall lists it as something to see, but the charity says it is planning maintenance and renovation over the winter ahead of its centenary in 2028, with no patients on site during that work. If you want to visit, phone 01736 731386 first. The same page of the hospital's site says an injured bird should go to a local vet.

What is there to do near Mousehole when it rains?

Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance

Penlee House Gallery & Museum (4.6 from 830 Google reviews) is open Monday to Saturday. Summer hours of 10am to 5pm run to 31 October, then from 1 November to 31 March it is open 10am to 4:30pm, with last admission at 4pm. Adults pay £8, ages 18 to 26 pay £4 and children are free. Some galleries close for exhibition installation from 10 January to 1 February 2027, with admission at half price, so check what is on. The café is in the park, and dogs on leads are welcome on the terrace but not inside the building. Bus 6 from Mousehole to Penzance bus station takes about 20 minutes, and you then walk or take a taxi to Morrab Road.

Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

Newlyn Art Gallery (4.0 from 298 Google reviews) in Newlyn, with its sister gallery The Exchange in Penzance, is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, in winter. Both are listed as fully accessible, have cafés, and offer free entry for children. Adults buy a pass that covers both venues for a year. The venues are cashless, with card, contactless or mobile payment. Newlyn Art Gallery has a lift to the upper gallery, and the quiet session runs on Fridays from 10am to noon.

How do you get around Mousehole in the rain?

Leave the car at The Parade car park (privately run, so pay and display properly) at the east end of the village, close to the Old Coastguard and the bus stop. Bus 6 terminates at The Parade, rather than the harbour. North Quay is an exposed breakwater and a poor place to be loading kids in a storm. Our parking guide has the prices.

What if it rains in winter?

Winter is when rain and the village fit together best: the pubs have their fires lit and the harbour lights switch on from 10 December. Not everything opens, though, so read Mousehole in winter first. With children, our Mousehole with kids guide covers more, and the Mousehole town page has the rest.
