Where to Watch the Sunset in Marazion (and the Starlings)

2026-10-04·Marazion

Short answer: Sunset in Penzance Bay is 6:14pm on 24 October, 5:12pm once the clocks go back, 5:01pm on 31 October and 4:19pm on 12 December, the earliest of the year. Good dusk spots in Marazion are the beach by the causeway, the Godolphin's windows and the Fire Engine's beer garden. From October to December starlings may roost at Marazion Marsh at dusk.

Winter in Marazion hands you a very early evening. The clocks go back on 25 October, the light goes at around five in late October, and by mid December it is gone before half past four. That makes dusk a real part of a winter day out here rather than something you stay up for. This guide gives the sunset times from a published source, three places to be as the light fades, and the other thing that happens at dusk in Marazion from October to December.

What time is sunset in Marazion this winter?

The clocks go back on the night of 24 to 25 October 2026. According to sunrisesunset.io for Penzance, a few miles along the same bay, sunset on Saturday 24 October is at 6:14pm and on Sunday 25 October it is 5:12pm, because the clocks have changed. By 31 October it is 5:01pm. The earliest sunset of the year is on Saturday 12 December at 4:19pm. Marazion's own time will be close to Penzance's, but check an almanac for your exact date if you are timing a photograph.

Where the sun actually goes down relative to the Mount depends on the time of year and on where you stand, and we have not found a published viewing guide for it, so this guide does not promise a particular sunset view. What it does give you is places with an open outlook over the bay and the Mount, which is what you want at the end of a winter afternoon whichever way the sky turns.

Where is the best place to be at dusk in Marazion?

From the beach by the causeway

The beach itself is the simplest place. Cornwall Council's dogs-on-beaches order restricts dogs between Long Rock level crossing and Marazion only from 1 July to 31 August, 10am to 6pm, so in winter dogs can come too. The tide matters: at high water the beach is narrow and the Mount stands alone, and at low water the causeway runs out to it. Arrive well before the times above, because the light drops quickly once it starts.

From the Godolphin's window

The Godolphin is the warm option, rated 4.3 from 2,230 Google reviews. A reviewer calls the view of the Mount from the bar incredible, and another describes sitting by the window at low tide. CAMRA lists bar hours of 10am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and noon to 10pm on Sunday, with food from noon to 9pm every day, and lists it as dog friendly. Some reviewers found the service slow on busy days, but a winter weekday bar is much quieter. If you want to stay, the hotel has ten bedrooms (CAMRA and Sawday's), with some rooms facing the sea.

From the Fire Engine's garden

The Fire Engine on Higher Fore Street is 4.4 from 818 Google reviews. Reviewers describe the beer garden and the view of the Mount and the bay, and CAMRA lists a small garden on a lower level and dog friendly seating. The pub is closed on Mondays according to CAMRA and its car park is small and on a slope, so most people walk up from the Square. On a winter evening, wrap up.

What are the starlings at Marazion Marsh?

This is the thing that makes a Marazion dusk different from the usual advice. The RSPB says starlings roost at RSPB Marazion Marsh in some years from October to December, and the Mount's own page about the marsh lists starling murmurations among its winter sights. The reserve has two viewing areas, one along the seafront pavement overlooking the pools and reedbeds and one facing the front of the reedbed, and it is free to visit, with donations welcome. There are no toilets on the reserve, dogs must be on a lead on the public footpaths, and the RSPB encourages you to bring a flask. Murmurations vary with weather and the season, so check the RSPB's social media for recent sightings before you make a special trip.

Where can you park for a dusk visit?

Cornwall Council's Marazion Station car park (TR17 0AA) charges £2.30 for the evening session from 6pm to midnight and nothing from midnight to 9am. From 9am to 6pm it is £2.50 for up to an hour, £5.10 for one to two hours and £7.50 for two to four hours, so if you arrive before 6pm for a 5pm sunset you will pay the daytime rate. The Mount's Short Stay car parks by the slipway are limited to three hours, and the tariff applies 24 hours a day. Reviewers describe fines for small overstays, so read the signs. See our Marazion parking guide.

Where should you eat after the light goes?

The Cutty Sark Restaurant and Bar and The Kings Arms on the Square both serve evening food according to CAMRA: the Cutty Sark from 6pm to 8:30pm and the Kings Arms from 6pm to 9pm. Our date night guide compares them. For a roast, see our Sunday roast guide if your dusk falls on a Sunday.

Is the causeway a good idea at dusk?

Not without checking. The causeway is cobbled, wet and slippery, it is passable for a couple of hours around low tide, and from 8 November there are no boats to rescue a mistake. The island also closes in high winds and poor sea conditions. Use the Mount's walking times calendar and read the causeway tide guide first. For a dusk walk, the beach is a safer plan than the causeway.

What should you wear and bring for a winter dusk?

Sturdy shoes if you are near the causeway, a flask if you are heading to the marsh, a lead if you have a dog, and a torch for the walk back, because the light goes quickly once the sun drops. The marsh has no toilets, and the RSPB says public toilets are at the station car park, so use them first.

What if it is cloudy or wet?

You can still use the evening: the Godolphin window and the pubs are better in a storm than the beach is. Our Marazion in the rain guide covers the daytime, and the winter in Marazion guide says what to expect. Penzance is a short ride away if you want more choice.
