Christmas Day Swims: Sennen, Coverack, Cadgwith

2026-10-21·Cornwall

Short answer: Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Usual start times: Sennen 11am, Polzeath 11am, Cadgwith around midday, Coverack 12.30pm. Charlestown's swim is on Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December) at 11.30am. These are informal annual traditions, so check each location's local posts for confirmed 2026 times.

The sea swims on Christmas morning are one of Cornwall's best free traditions, and the ones in the far west and on the south coast are a little less crowded than Newquay or Perranporth. We already cover Newquay, Perranporth, Gyllyngvase and St Ives. This guide covers the rest. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday and Boxing Day on a Saturday.

Sennen Cove Christmas Day swim

Sennen is described as the UK's most westerly Christmas swim and a tradition of around 50 years. The Classic Cottages guide gives 11am on Christmas Day and says more than 300 people take part, while a Greenbank Hotel guide says more than 500. Either way, expect a crowd on the beach. Wetsuits are not allowed according to the Greenbank guide, and mulled wine is served afterwards. It is an unofficial event with no organiser or entry fee listed. Parking at Sennen Cove beach fills quickly on busy days, and one reviewer notes a steep hill down to the car park, so consider parking at the top of the hill and walking.

Coverack Christmas Day swim

This one started with a doctor's bet to swim across the harbour. Swimmers gather at Coverack Harbour for around 12.30pm (Greenbank says to arrive for midday), many in fancy dress, and afterwards warm up with mulled wine by a fire at the Fisherman's Rest at the top of the slipway. Money raised goes to cancer charities. Classic Cottages notes it was moved to New Year's Day in 2025, so check Coverack's community social media for the 2026 day. The village has a small car park a short walk from the beach, and The Lifeboat House restaurant (4.3 from 377 Google reviews) is open Thursday to Sunday out of season.

Cadgwith Cove Christmas Day swim

Cadgwith is the quietest of the lot and the best choice for a nervous first-timer. Classic Cottages says the swim starts at noon, with the Cadgwith Cove Inn welcoming swimmers from 11.30am to 2pm. A We Are Cornwall listing says the swim starts from 11am, so the exact time is worth confirming. The pub has 4.7 from 1,123 Google reviews and is known for shanty singers on Friday nights.

Polzeath Christmas Day swim

On the north coast, Polzeath Beach draws more than 400 people at 11am on Christmas Day. It is unorganised, with no fee, and the advice is to go without a wetsuit if you can, for the full effect. Hot chocolate and mulled drinks are mentioned by one guide. The beach is 4.7 from 915 Google reviews. One older listing places the swim on Boxing Day, so confirm.

Charlestown Boxing Day swim

Charlestown is on Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December, with the main event starting at 11.30am. It has been run since 1991 by Charlestown Rowing Club, and the money raised goes to local charities including Young People Cornwall, the RNLI and Cornwall Hospice Care. Fancy dress is encouraged and there are hundreds of swimmers, with spectators welcome. One older list puts it on Christmas Day, but two current listings agree on Boxing Day. Parking in the village is limited and the entrance road is narrow, so allow time. See Charlestown Harbour, and the St Austell guide for nearby places to warm up.

Can children take part in a Christmas Day swim in Cornwall?

None of the informal swims at Sennen, Coverack, Cadgwith or Polzeath publish an age limit, organiser or entry process, so there is no official rule to quote. That makes it your call as a parent, and sea conditions on the day should decide it. Watching from the sand is a good plan for younger children.

The RNLI's festive advice, reported in the North Devon Gazette on 30 December 2025, is useful for anyone going in:

Charlestown is the one swim with some organisation. An earlier Cornish Times piece said registration is on the harbour front and closes at 10.45am, and that swimmers are asked to raise at least £10 for charity before arriving. That article did not give a year, so confirm the process with Charlestown Rowing Club. It also advised footwear because the beach is pebbly, which matters for small feet and for anyone who struggles with uneven ground.

Can you just watch a Christmas Day swim, and where can you warm up?

Yes. Spectators are a big part of every one of these swims, and the crowds are friendly. Arrive 30 minutes early for a spot on the sand or the quay, and wear far more than you think you need. Standing still by the sea on 25 December is colder than the swimmers will admit.

Opening on Christmas Day is the catch. The hours below are normal-week Google hours, and many places shut or run short hours on the day, so ring ahead.

Beach and harbour access is uneven in most of these places. Charlestown's beach is pebbly, Sennen has a steep hill down to the cove, and Coverack's slipway gathers a crowd, so people with limited mobility should think about viewing from the top of the slipway or the car park. The organisers do not publish a dog policy, so keep dogs on a lead and away from swimmers.
