New Year's Day Swims 2027: Falmouth, Newquay, Harlyn

2026-10-21·Falmouth

Short answer: New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday. Guides list a midday swim at Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth, and a midday charity swim at Newquay Harbour. Harlyn Bay and Readymoney Cove are also listed without times, and Coverack moved its Christmas swim to 1 January in 2025. These are informal, so check local posts for 2027 times.

If Christmas Day swims are not enough, or you want to blow away the cobwebs after New Year's Eve, there is a second wave of dips on 1 January. These are informal traditions, so there is rarely a published timetable, but the pattern is consistent: midday, hundreds of people, fancy dress welcome. 1 January 2027 is a Friday.

Gyllyngvase Beach New Year's Day swim, Falmouth

Gyllyngvase Beach is the main Falmouth swim. Classic Cottages lists it for midday with hundreds of participants, and says any attire is accepted. We Are Cornwall describes it as an annual event from 12pm open to all ages. It is a gentle shelving beach with a cafe, toilets and lifeguards in the season, and reviewers praise the clear water (4.6 from 492 Google reviews). Parking is limited on the front, and a reviewer notes free street parking about five minutes away. Our Gyllyngvase Boxing Day guide has the practical detail on parking and the cafe after, which applies equally on 1 January.

Getting to Gyllyngvase on 1 January

The beach has a cafe, a bakery, toilets and lifeguards in season, and reviewers say the town is a ten minute walk up the hill. Dogs are banned in the summer between 10am and 6pm, but that rule does not apply in January. The beach is shingle and sand mixed, so wear something on your feet to get in comfortably. After the swim, most people head straight for a hot drink on the front, so expect a queue at the cafe.

Newquay Harbour New Year's Day swim

Newquay Harbour hosts a charity swim at midday, according to the Classic Cottages list. Donations are welcome on the day, and it advises arriving early, as it is very popular. A holiday cottage guide to New Year in Cornwall also lists a charity New Year's Day swim in Newquay as a local tradition. There is more on the festive swims in the town in our Newquay festive swims guide.

Harlyn Bay and Readymoney Cove

One holiday-let blog lists Harlyn Bay Beach near Padstow and Readymoney Cove in Fowey as New Year's Day swims, without any times. We could not confirm organisers or start times for either, so treat them as 'ask locally'. Harlyn Bay is a wide, sandy north-coast beach with a pay car park (4.7 from 177 Google reviews). For other north coast options, see Padstow in winter.

Coverack and Looe

Coverack's Christmas Day harbour swim moved to New Year's Day in 2025, according to Classic Cottages, who say to check social media. See Coverack Harbour and our west and south Cornwall swims guide. For the south-east, Looe has its own tradition, which we explain in Looe New Year's Day swim.

Safety and what to bring

What is open afterwards in Falmouth?

Falmouth's cafes and pubs have limited hours on 1 January. Our Falmouth in winter guide covers what stays open out of season, and the Falmouth guide has the town. If you are coming from the night before, see New Year's Eve fireworks in Truro and Newquay.

Are there lifeguards and is the New Year's Day swim safe for children?

Gyllyngvase is described as open to all ages in the swim listings we found, but there is a practical catch. Falmouth's tourism site says RNLI lifeguards patrol from May to September, so on 1 January there will be none on duty. Nobody is running the swim as a supervised event that we could find, as it is informal.

Newquay's harbour swim is a charity event, with donations welcome on the day, but we have not seen a safety briefing or marshal arrangements published. Check the local organiser's page nearer the time.

Our Gyllyngvase Boxing Day swim guide covers the same beach on 26 December.

Can you take your dog to the New Year's Day swim?

At Gyllyngvase, yes. Cornwall Council's dogs on beaches page lists the Gyllyngvase restriction as 15 May to 30 September, 10am to 6pm, and shows nothing for January. Falmouth's tourism site says dogs are welcome at all other times. So a dog on a lead is allowed on 1 January.

Newquay Harbour and Harlyn Bay do not appear in the council's list, so we cannot tell you their rules. The council says other beaches may have their own local restrictions, and gives 0300 1234 212 or publicprotection@cornwall.gov.uk for questions.

In practice, a swim with hundreds of people in fancy dress is busy. If you swim, someone else has to hold the dog, and the lead is a trip hazard on a crowded beach. For quieter dog beaches in the area, see our Falmouth dog-friendly beaches guide.

Where can you warm up after the Newquay Harbour swim?

The harbour is a short walk from several pubs and restaurants. Opening times below are Google's usual hours, and 1 January hours may differ, so check first.

At Falmouth, Gylly Beach Cafe is built over the sand, with 4.4 from 3,600 Google reviews and Google hours of 9am to 10pm daily. Dogs are welcome according to a reviewer. Confirm it is open on 1 January.
